Phone question

I called up an SP yesterday and she noted that, in addition to my cell phone number, my name showed up in her call display.

She suggested I might want to fix that. I zipped though the on-line guide to my phone and could find no instructions dealing with displaying number but not name.

I spoke to my carrier and even reviewed the matter with a tech guy who got me to call some numbers and he advised that my name did not show up. He indicated that they did not even suport name display and it would not make any difference if I called someone with a different carrier. He suggested that perhaps the person I called had obtained a phone from someone who had me listed as a contact; thus, my name and number were linked. Hmmm... I doubt that. I use this phone only for SPs. (I did not mention this to the tech guy).

So, does anyone here have any ideas as to what the heck happened?Naturally, I am dying to call another SP and have my name show up. This phone has not been a problem in the last four years and now?

something new

I have noticed in the last month that when people call my cell their name now shows up. This never happened before. This must be something new...anyone else???

I had to talk to my cell provider about it previously. Then recently again I called my girlfriend and it happened again.

What kind of cell are you using? As some have settings to change your network default. My 810i can be set to "unknown number".

I believe it is only Fido phones

Rogers done this about a year and a half ago and the only way to stop your name from displaying was to have a permanent block put on your phone. You should have received a brochure in your bill a few months ago mentioning the 'free trial' for name display you would receive.

From what I have observed in the last month or so, it appears that name display only shows up on Fido to Fido calls. If anybody else is getting it with a differnt provider right now, I would love to know.

With my 810i you can choose to have "Show Number" or "Hide Number", and it only takes a few seconds to switch back and fourth. I also use Rogers.

So you can still call Stephanie and be discreet. What type of phone do you have? Brand? Model #.?

Same thing happened to me a few months ago with Fido. As someone else noted - When I asked to have my name blocked, I was told the only way to do that was to block all the info (including phone number). I had that phone from before my SP days so my full name was displaying

Anyway, I ended up switching to another provider around the same time but for a different reason so I made sure to ask for my initials only to be displayed and not my entire name.

I think that's a really silly thing as most ppl don't want every person they call to have access to their name!?

Cell phone companies are all evil. I swear. :p Evil.

Blow $10 on a used Nokia phone

Order a SIM on ebay for $5-20 (depends on how much airtime you get)
Get any name on it you want. R Klein, S Harper, G W Bush, James Bond or whomever you fancy to be...

Spend $10/mo for airtime on your 'special hotline' - when it rings you know it's gonna be a hot time...

Or use the Universal Telephone Anonymizer - a payphone (ala Slim Shady)

I have a newer handset from this years lineup from Fido and it doesn't display the name.

It can't be that all the people that called me had blocked numbers or whatever makes the names show up.

I've decided to have my name/number show up but when returning calls to guests, I *67 the call so I wouldn't incriminate or jeopardize the guests if they are attached. I know it's not my responsibility but it's a nice touch. Kinda like getting a scrub down from Szabina or playing with Classy Angels boobs. Having the "privacy" option on a per call basis also prevents your number from showing up on the telephone register whomever you're calling.

My Rogers Nokia cell often displays the number and name of the caller. I assume my real name must pop up as well once in awhile.

I was yacking away to a client yesterday about people who have set up their phones with their real names and he advised me that there was a post on the review boards about that exact issue. Funny enough, the person that I was talking to is the same client that told me almost 3 years ago that my real name was on my phone. Since this happens quite frequently I thought I would help out if I can.

This is how I believe it happens:

When initially setting up your voice mail you are prompted to say your name. This is where you should either put your persona or, like I did, just quote your phone number. To change this I think you have to go into your voice mail options.

If you did voice record your real name it will come up at different times:
When you call a person and they are unavailable lots of phones say
so & so is unavailable to take your call, please leave a message”
When you leave a message on a persons phone
“this message is from so & so and was sent from the following phone number”

It is definitely the person that set up the phone and not the phone company that is doing it in my experience. The name is always distinctively different from the rest of the recording and suspiciously sounds just like the person who owns the phone.

I use Telus and I’ve never had a name come up on my call display unless I’ve previously entered them into my address book.

I hope this helps you Stew!

Oddly enough it used to be that on landlines telus was the only service that gave the name of the caller. If they weren't on the telus network there was no name. This was actually fairly annoying as our work phone system for some reason *only* showed the name.

I'm on Rogers and do know that my name does appear on other Rogers cell phones. Also when friends call me from their Rogers cell phone, their name will appear on my cell or landline phone.

I also do have the option to "hide" my number prior to each call, but it gets annoying and when I'm in a hurry, I just want to dial my number.

So....what about privacy? I was told that *67 doesn't work on a cell phone...does it work now?

Now everyone will know who you are!!

Businesses that call me display their name

So weird that even businesses like RBC show up on my phone literally saying RBC even though it isn't programmed in my phone's caller list.

That is normal that a business show their name, larger businesses even tend to change the phone number you see to their main number, so that you don't call back the number that called you, but you know who called. When you call back you get their main switch, which has a receptionist, (automated or real)

you can hire a private investigator for just over 300 track the jps system on some ones phone that called you( its run through some kind of computer program ).. and find out the address of the person who called you... seen it done to recover stolen property !!!! so nothing is ever as private as any one thinks.. we are in the 21st century ..,. another 100 years and we will probably have chips.. in our brains.. granted that we even live that long..
