I hear that the Coyotes will be declaring bankruptcy as their losses keep climbing and climbing. There is a possibility they will fold at the end of this season. If so, what will happen to their players and players in their farm system?

Over Gary Bettman dead body will this happen. The ego in him will go to the ends of the world to make sure the survival of the warm area teams like Phoenix, Florida, Atlanta and to maybe Nashville. That little guy and the New Jersey Devils set hockey back a ton.

The team won't fold, but I wouldn't be surprised if they relocate.

Kansas City has a new arena, with 18,000 seats, luxury suites and no sports team to play in it. They're the front runners to get a team.

I think Hartford is also building a new arena and will be pursuing a team soon, so they could be in the mix.

In order for them to relocate, they need to declare bankruptcy due to the lease they signed for the new building. Once they declare bankruptcy, then the assets go to the creditors who would then sell the team to the highest bidder.

Other sports teams with existing leases have moved in the past. Someone will have to write a big cheque to negotiate a buyout.

When the Sonics moved out of Seattle it cost $75 mil to buy out the lease. $25 mil for Heisley to move the Grizzlies. If the teams losing 30 million a year or more as they claim, i'm sure they will find a buyer willing to cut a cheque and get the team out of town.

Well, if they fold, there would be a dispersil draft of the players. I don't think you will see them fold though. More than likely, you will probably see someome buy out the current owners and more than likely move the team. As others mention, Kansas City would be a good bet as well as that the inventor of the Blackberry, Balsile is his name?, could scoop them up and move them to Hamilton depending on what Toronto and Buffalo say due to territorial issues.

I'm glad I still have my green Phoenix Coyote hat from the Coyote-Oilers game from March 17th, 2008 when the Oilers hammered the Coyotes 8-4

Since leaving Winnipeg, they have lost $650 million USF.
The NHL has revenue sharing now so Bettman will keep them going as long as he can. The Jets never made money after the 1986 season.
Couldn't get a new NHL size arena built.
Not enough Corperate sponsers.
Were held ransom by Wpg Enterprises (City of Winnipeg).
Issues: Poor lease agreement / no concession sales / 20% of parking revenue.
So the people wonder why they left??

There are 4 teams in dire straights right now in the NHL. Big changes are coming. The NHL map will be different 5 years from now.
I agree completely - there are many teams in trouble. if you look at ticket prices for some teams, you can get tickets for 3 games, including a hotdog/burger and pop at each game, for less than $50. I believe even Detroit had an offer like that, but it was around $100. So even some cities that have good attendance are not making huge revenues - unlike the Canadian teams which hold the NHL together.

In a few years, I predict a 24 team NHL.

I would love to see them back in Winnipeg but there are questions about their arena, pretty new all be it, as to whether it can be viable for an NHL team. I think it only houses 15 to 16 thousand people. Anyone feel free to correct me if I am wrong. :)
Maybe but at least they'll get far more support and ticket sales. Most of those Southern State NHL teams can barely fill half the arena and receive little or no attention from the local media.

On the other hand, folding teams = dispersal draft = less diluted talent

Funny how Bettman hasnt made one comment on his great Southern expansion. I have rooted for his plan to fail forever because it diluted the league. Hockey was never as skilled as in the 90s when scorers of 50 to 60 goals were everywhere. It too bad lots of people will lose jobs in those cities.

I have NHL center ice and some games in Atlanta, Miami, the lower bowl is perhaps 40-50 full at best sometimes. And than you tune in to the Canadian games and its feels like a college football game, packed and full of energy.

Ideally..

Ideally, Gary Bettman would like Phoenix to stay where they are since they are in the top 15 cities in the US in terms of television markets. According, to Darren Dreger on TSN the League currently is propping up this franchise and hopefully have it sold and under new ownership within 2 months.

The belief is if the team can start winning and play entertaining hockey the fans will come back. Look at the Chicago Blackhawks who only a few years back had a season ticket base of 3,500 and now it's 14,000. Of course they had young talent like Toews, Kane, Keith, Seabrook all starting to round into form. Phoenix is in a similar boat with Peter Mueller, Kyle Turris, Mikkel Boedker who are young dynamic hockey players that could prop this team up.

But let's say for argument sake the team has to be moved. I'd move Phoenix to a canadian city. Either, Quebec City (which deserves a team after the Nordiques were moved), Kitchener-Waterloo/Hamilton as I see Ontario being able to support another hockey team.

Personal opinion is I don't think the League would fold franchises. I think either they will move them in markets that either A) would make hockey the number 1 sport in the city or B) move them to places where they have snow LOL. Rumor is they would like to expand to 32 teams.

Off topic, but one expansion franchise that I think would work would be one in Las Vegas. Now I know it's crazy but with over 1.8million residents, Jerry Bruckheimer leading the group with MGM to build and finance a new arena. Things could be interesting. I mean, the locals need something to do and you could get corporate support from the hotels and casino's comping their whales to games or luxury suites etc. Then again I could just be grasping at straws since I go there once every two months lol. I need my hockey fill.

Nope - you are correct. The MTS centre holds 15,015 for hockey games. It's a great building, vastly superior to the old barn, but the dream is over. We fucked up (back in the nineties) and our city cannot support an NHL team.

I mean, I miss the Jets terribly, but some of the diehards you get in this city who dream of the Jets miraculously coming back are pathetic at best. We had our chance, and we blew it...
