Other sports teams with existing leases have moved in the past. Someone will have to write a big cheque to negotiate a buyout. In order for them to relocate, they need to declare bankruptcy due to the lease they signed for the new building. Once they declare bankruptcy, then the assets go to the creditors who would then sell the team to the highest bidder.
Well, if they fold, there would be a dispersil draft of the players. I don't think you will see them fold though. More than likely, you will probably see someome buy out the current owners and more than likely move the team. As others mention, Kansas City would be a good bet as well as that the inventor of the Blackberry, Balsile is his name?, could scoop them up and move them to Hamilton depending on what Toronto and Buffalo say due to territorial issues.I hear that the Coyotes will be declaring bankruptcy as their losses keep climbing and climbing. There is a possibility they will fold at the end of this season. If so, what will happen to their players and players in their farm system?
I agree completely - there are many teams in trouble. if you look at ticket prices for some teams, you can get tickets for 3 games, including a hotdog/burger and pop at each game, for less than $50. I believe even Detroit had an offer like that, but it was around $100. So even some cities that have good attendance are not making huge revenues - unlike the Canadian teams which hold the NHL together.Since leaving Winnipeg, they have lost $650 million USF.![]()
The NHL has revenue sharing now so Bettman will keep them going as long as he can. The Jets never made money after the 1986 season.
Couldn't get a new NHL size arena built.
Not enough Corperate sponsers.
Were held ransom by Wpg Enterprises (City of Winnipeg).
Issues: Poor lease agreement / no concession sales / 20% of parking revenue.
So the people wonder why they left??
There are 4 teams in dire straights right now in the NHL. Big changes are coming. The NHL map will be different 5 years from now.
I say move them back to Winterpeg!
Maybe but at least they'll get far more support and ticket sales. Most of those Southern State NHL teams can barely fill half the arena and receive little or no attention from the local media.I would love to see them back in Winnipeg but there are questions about their arena, pretty new all be it, as to whether it can be viable for an NHL team. I think it only houses 15 to 16 thousand people. Anyone feel free to correct me if I am wrong.![]()
Nope - you are correct. The MTS centre holds 15,015 for hockey games. It's a great building, vastly superior to the old barn, but the dream is over. We fucked up (back in the nineties) and our city cannot support an NHL team.I would love to see them back in Winnipeg but there are questions about their arena, pretty new all be it, as to whether it can be viable for an NHL team.
