Omg.. My cat "Nova" is in heat. She has that annoying meow and perks her ass up. First cat owner, she is a year old now and I dont want to get her neutered. Cause one day I wanna buy a male cat siamease/himalyan or himalyan so they can mate and have cute babies.. heehee I put her on the porch maybe a male will hear her meow and she will get what shes asking for. Any advice??

Thats great, because I was at a cat shelter last week dropping off a food donation and I thought "what, only 225 cats here?, gosh, I wish more pet owners would be irresponsible and not fix their cat, maybe we could hit 300 by the new year". The problem with 'cute' kittens is they inevitably become not so cute cats, who more times then not end up either dumped at the shelter or sitting on a porch at night, waiting to be a coyote snack...good thinking!

grow up. 'breeding' cats is not the joy you think it is,
and meanwhile you have a miserable cat that won't be
happy in heat or pregnant.

take an hour out of your self-centred life and go to the SPCA
and see what happens to animals that have 'owners' who don't
spay or neuter their pets ... its not pretty or sweet or even pleasant.

having a pet means responsibility: i don't give a flying fuck what
you do in your personal life, but having a 'pet' means you have
taken on responsibility for every aspect of that living being's needs,
and there is no need for that cat to suffer your ignorance.

Real pet lovers do not let their animals run free, They spay or neuter them.

I have two dogs from the rescue foundation and being in that place is heart breaking!

Not contributing to the cat overpopulation is one good reason for spaying your cat. If you love your cat another one is that spayed cats live longer than unspayed cats. Of all diseases, cancer is the number one killer of cats and unspayed females are susceptible to a number of cancers that spayed cats aren't. Females can come into heat every few weeks and the surge in hormones that they experience can be very stressful to their bodies and make them more susceptible to a variety of diseases. Also if you haven't bred cats before you may not be aware that as many as 30% of pregnancies in cats result in complications. Many times it is just the kittens that die but there are many complication that may kill your beloved cat as well.

Ps don't worry about neutering her, neutering is for males, spaying is for females.

Anna... by not spaying Nova, you are leaving her open to a lot of serious health issues (check with your Vet.)
You will be doing her a favour and will get a gentler, more loving pet in the bargain.
And, yes, cats can be spayed while they are in heat.
Just as an aside, the project that I work at had a female drop a litter... we managed to find homes for some but the rest, including the mom went to the SPCA... the Meow Foundation has so many cats right now that they can't take any more.

Don't breed.

The novelty of having puppies/kittens is great, but think of all of the homes that pets need already.

I have neutered both my cat and dog. For me, I don't think a lot of people are ''good'' pet owners and they end up not caring for them the way that they should be. I could have made a killing off of my dog, but why bother?

The Winnipeg Humane Society puts down 250 animals per day. That is so heartbreaking for me.

I can only imagine what it would be like in B.C.

Glad I'm not the only one thinking this way. First, if she's female she should be spayed (not neutered). You state you want to get a Siamese one day to breed cute kittens, then say maybe you'll leave her on the porch and she'll get what she needs. Do you really love this cat or just see it as some sort of disposable "thing"? I agree with LG - grow up and tend to this animal. A pet is like a child that never grows up. They need a lot of attention and being a responsible owner means caring for them a lot more than you are showing.

Please spay your cat. It's absolutely heartbreaking to think of all the cute little puppies and kittens who will be put down because they can't find homes, and it's no less painful to think of all the handsome dogs and cats who are no less wonderful but will die, pretty much because they're not babies any more.

I adopted my (full-grown) cat from the pound, and he's the loving-est cat ever. He hated being there as much as I did wandering through.

Maybe you could volunteer with the SPCA as a foster parent. Let a couple of kittens come live with you for a few weeks. Love them, train them and socialize them so they will be easily adopted. You get the joy of a never-ending supply of kittens, and the joy of knowing that you've helped prepare them for a long and happy life. And not only are you not encouraging proliferation, you are actively contributing to the solution.

PS. if your one cat is getting on your nerves now, I can't imagine you'll enjoy it any more when you suddenly have second and a handful of kittens to deal with too.

It's not just male cats who will spray, the hormone surges in females in heat can lead to behavioural problems in many female cats, one of which is spraying.

To get her sprayed, how much will it cost?? I will feel bad about her being in pain after that. I hate seeing animals in pain but its not for that long right?

Good for you Anna, glad to see you decided to spay your cat.

The costs can vary depending on the Vet. The cheapest I've seen is about $65. Spaying is a little more expensive than neutering because it is more complicated and invasive than just chopping a male cats testicles off. $65-$150 is a reasonable price range, if your vet quotes you much more than that you might want to shop around. The pain shouldn't be significant and should go away quickly, the incission may itch so watch to make sure she doesn't chew at it or you might have to get a cone.

Keep her locked up until she comes out of heat then book her in right away. Don't take her in to be spayed while she is in heat it makes the surgery more complicated and puts the cat at greater risk. But don't wait too long after she comes out of heat or she may come right back into heat in a couple of weeks.
