There will be an explanation in due course. Please keep the rumor and speculation to a minimum until the admins have time to share. The site is secure, but do not use any of the old email addresses for the admins, the new ones will be shared with us shortly.

People on all of Fred's boards have mentioned that there are posts and PM's missing.

Great to see the Forum back and running.Main source of information for me and at times a source of entertainment too.

Did the site get restored from backup? A bunch of my deleted IM's are back, and an IM that I sent before the board was shut down seems to have disappeared.

I'd recommend a password change immediately. If you normally go straight to the forum from a browser shortcut the site was asking for your username and ID. This may be password harvesting.

I appreciate guys like you who understand what's really happening. Most of us are unable to comprehend the technical details.

Thank you for the reminder Warl0ck. Just went and did that. Now, if only I can remember the new one! I never write down passwords, but the closer I get to the age of dementia, the harder it is to remember them all.

Well there are password managers you can get but a nosy person (a spouse) might wonder what that is for. The easiest way is to use a simple phrase of something that you can remember. While it's better to have @Bunch0fCh@r@ct3rs a password like I_Like_Hot_Chicks is also pretty secure. Try out this site to test how secure your password https://howsecureismypassword.net/. Now, keep in mind a password is only as secure as the system & the hashing algorithms, etc but passwords don't always have to be @LLCr@zyL1k3Th1$. You could also just write the password down and put in your wallet (no username). If you're wallet is stolen it's just a word. If your wife finds it, it's for work or something work related.

As a side note, it appears Fred was "phished", infected & then compromised. I'll write up a PSA about this later when I get some time. Most "hacking" is actually not that technical, it's usually social engineering or spear phishing attempts. That's because most "hackers" really don't have that much skill. They chase what's called the low hanging fruit and there is a lot of it.

I use a password manager for business and financial passwords. For social stuff I just go with memory.

Hmm. I get a "bad gateway" error when I log out from PERB now.

Just to reiterate, the password prompt that popped up while perb was down was super sketchy due to the compromised nature of the site at the time. Essentially, if you entered your login/password into that prompt, you should consider that login information compromised and change it immediately, unless otherwise stated by Fred and/or any other perb staff. You should also strongly consider changing your password anywhere else you used the same login information (other sites, etc.).

Barring any further information from admin, it's only prudent to take steps to protect yourself.
