Here are the poll choices:

Yes I care meticulously about grammar. I’m a grammar god, a spelling stud. I could teach highschool Lit, make that grad Lit at King’s College.

No, I'm a little lazy. I’d never proofread my posts like a sissy, although I’d proofread everyone’s posts like a beak.

Abstain. No opinion, I just like to go to voting booths without voting. Collect a free voting pencil.

i'm not a grammar nazi, but it would be nice if people at least used punctuation and spelling properly. I can forgive typos and the lack of capital letters (i had a g/f who had an aversion to using capitals in her typing) but spelling and punctuation are two things that on should be vigilant about.

Oh, and using the correct form of a word such as "to" and "too"

There's a guy in another, non-pooning related, forum that i frequent and his spelling and lack of periods is enough to drive anyone around the bend.

hes notorious for not using periods, right and hissp aces and seplling suck s,right and its brutal to read becuz he uses all kinds of shrthand, i dunnno if it's intentionel but it drives me nust and his sentenses go onand on an don, and i gets a headake when i have to try to figureout wtf he's tpying about espeshullywhen he forgetstousethe space bar abd doesnt bother to coerrct his seplilng mitsakes and his sentenses neverend because he is to lazy to use periods, right

I just don't understand how one can be THAT lazy as to completely ignore some of the most basic grammatical theories.

I'm not a spelling nazi or a lit major but it does bother me to read stuff with bad spelling or sentence structure, but only because I automatically correct it in my head and it wastes my time. I don't mind taking a little more time to use capitals etc as it doesn't look right to me if I don't.

The only things I hate are stories that are not split into paragraphs, reading 50 lines of text with no paragraph splits is hard on the eyes.

Also I'm not crazy about the AOL people in forums. Like the c-u-l8r, and the brb, and the U instead of you and the 2 instead of to, etc.....

Taking some long words and shortening them is fine , but it's obvious when your going over board.

I wish I wasn't like that but unfortunately I can't stop myself. When I'm reading posts I can't help but mentally "grade" what's been written first. I want to believe that when people are writing on their computer they are more interested in getting the message out rather than editing and spell-checking. There have been some disturbing examples of spelling and poor grammar though. To many people it simply isn't important. I agree with Hitrack about using the symbols and single letters for words ( u=you, r=are, b4=before, etc). I find that tiresome. Just use the proper word.

Spelling mistakes and grammar bother me, but not everyone cares. The meaning of the message is what counts. Very often the spelling and grammatical mistakes make the message hard to understand.

Sloppy spelling and grammar shows that the writer is either only semi-literate or lazy and sloppy. Although the former may be forgivable, the latter is a demonstration of a lack of respect for the readers.

Failure to edit and spell-check one's posts is as impolite as failure to use deoderant before you ride the Skytrain.

Just call me "anal-hyphen-retentive."

Good point Oldfart! I do wonder if it is an SP with bad grammer does that make it look like she might be unproffessional business wise as well? Or not smart? I know from a pooners position I might be leary...

While I can stand the odd spelling error, (we all make them) lack of punctuation and spacing can be very annoying. It still amazes me how many e-mails I get at work from CEO's, VP's, and other higher ups, that look like they've been typed by a 5 year old. You wouldn't write a letter to someone like that, so why does the fact that your sending an e-mail make it any different? When you are simply chatting on MSN or ICQ with a friend, by all means, abbreviate all you want, otherwise, break out the spell checker!

Damn, I can be anal sometimes.

Of note: there are numerous differences in what is accepted spelling in Canada and what is accepted in the States. Always check which spellcheck dictionary you are using, there are a number of different english dictionaries availble in MS Word.

That's not being anal, Scott. If it was, then our learning institutions would be filled with anal'ists. Correct grammar, punctuation and spelling are tools that help us convey our thoughts accurately, and helps distinguish the proponents of these skills from others that lack finesse and style in writing. The latter look upon us as snobs. I look on them as slobs. There is hope, however...

Having said all this, this posture is in no way an attempt to slight others that were trained in a different language or culture. It is however meant as a prod for those who would think otherwise. There is nothing in this world more refreshing, than to read well and thoughfully written prose.

Good point Maury.

But I find it even funnier that in correcting me you made a mistake as well, unless "does that makes it look like she might be unprofessional" is correct? Lol. [Oops, after posting I see someone else caught it too.]

And I guess I am not a spelling Nazi as much as a sentence structure, capital letter and paragraph Nazi. At least if someone tries I am happy. I do make an effort to link to the Dictionary , but only if I think I don't know how to spell something! If I think I do, I go ahead. Lifes too short to second guess everything.
