I guess this should fit here. The one odd movie about the buyers and not the sellers.

Talk about a hall of mirrors! Sook-Yin Lee adapts a graphic novel by her ex-boyfriend, Canadian cartoonist Chester Brown, about the end of their relationship in the early naughts and Brown’s subsequent decision to start paying for sex. Dan Beirne (The Twentieth Century) plays Brown, and he’s joined by a cast that includes Emily Lê (Riceboy Sleeps) as Sook-yin stand-in Sonny and Andrea Werhun (Modern Whore) as Yulissa, the sex worker who forms a long-term relationship with Brown.

The tone here is affectionately comedic, matter of fact, and sex positive, not salacious or leering. If you’re at all familiar with her work, you will know that Sook-Yin Lee is unafraid to venture into uncomfortable areas, but what comes through most strongly is her respect for the women involved, and the deep bond she still shares with Chester Brown. Beirne plays him as a calm, curious adventurer who diligently researches escort etiquette and whose forthright transactional approach may have you reconsidering social orthodoxy. Lê’s Sook-Yin substitute is likewise a charming presence, leading with her heart and making plenty of missteps as she navigates the uncertain territory of sex in the contemporary world.

Sook Yin Lee... there's a name I haven't heard since the 90s, watching Muchmusic.

...anyways, this looks to be another silly caricature placed on clients. I mean, I might have some love-handles happening myself who's time as an "alpha male" has long since passed so I can't judge too harshly, but I know for a fact I'm not some low-T manlet cuck with a sunken jawline which seems to be Hollywood's go to cliche when representing a man that pays for sex...

I used to be pretty into Chester Brown and his associated scene of depressed autobiographical graphic novelists. He's very talented and even though I'm not a fan of his politics (he ran for parliament under the libertarian party) he's one of the few people willing to talk about his experience buying sex. I read the graphic novel when it came out and thought it was great, but I dunno if I'll bother checking out this adaptation

Hugh Grant had Elizabeth Hurley as a GF and still went shopping. I vaguely remember a thread long ago that asked the ladies about 'famous' clients -- they are definitely out there.

The #metoo movement revealed that Harvey Weinstein and Hollywood in general was one of the biggest purveyors of sex for fleeting fame. I doubt Hollywood will ever really portray what goes on or who clients really are for the general public.

I saw it, and thought it was very well done. She did a talk afterwards and was very passionate about the work that went into it. There were varied portrayals of providers and clients, indies and agencies. Included real life themes that we all deal with, eg. clients getting scammed or providers experiencing housing insecurity. If you haven’t seen it I’d definitely recommend.

We definitely get the kind of clients the movie is talking about too. Our clients come in all types of personalities, shapes and sizes, from all walks of life and income brackets.

I just googled it and it looks worth watching.

I’ve owned the book twice and donated one copy to a favourite incall and still have one copy for myself. It’s a great read and quite realistic IMO. I haven’t seen the film version but will check it out.

I did think the book was quite realistic in that people got together to discuss the local industry because that’s exactly what we did at the ‘office’’ aka a local pub. I always looked forward to agenda dates at the office! A group of us ‘pooners’ and like minded ‘SP’s’ would socialize off the clock about all things about our own “Paying for it” microcosm. Good times with guys and SP’s all seeing each other on the clock and socializing off the clock too.

Those are times I’ll recall as highlights from my active pooning days. Great times for sure! I’d say it also added the SP’s paying customers because of our social interactions through our group.

For those of you who socialize with SP’s and share intel with other pooners I encourage you to reach out to form your own ‘office’ gatherings. It was definitely a bonus for me being in an environment that is naturally a singular anonymous by nature hobby..

I thought it was great. Funny, told with heart, characters that felt real and not one-dimensional (except for the one nerdy friend). Paced well, emotionally balanced. It was interesting to have a lens into an era of sex work that was before my time (calling classified ads in the 90s). I'd never heard of the graphic novel before a friend invited me to watch the movie and will definitely plan to read it now!

Imo, Chester Brown's portrayal doesn't feel like a caricature. Although agreed with Harmony, we do get clients like his character
:p

No, No... don't get me wrong. I'm not saying these people don't exist. I'm saying "why is it everytime Hollywood portrays a person who pays for sex in any movie, 9 times out of 10, its that particular phenotype?" and not just regular everyday people of all types of personalities, shapes and sizes, from all walks of life and income brackets. As if there is a point the filmmakers need to make that anyone seeking to pay for sex is some weirdo degenerate and not... 'normal' everyday people?

There's no such thing as "normal everyday people".

As for the characterization in this movie, it's based on an autobiography. The character is the author.
