I'm thinking of reading "Paying For It" by Chester Brown. It's gotten some good reviews, however I'd like to know how people who have first hand experience with the topic feel about it? And also, is it something that clients may get more out of than SPs? Or since we're both involved in the industry would we both enjoy it? I'd love to hear your opinions.

I considered reading it until I heard an interview with the author on the radio. I thought it sounded a bit boring, so I never ended up giving it a try.

But who knows, maybe I judged too quickly?

I read it a while ago... And although I appreciate that it's out in the mainstream, it wasn't really what I was expecting in terms of "interesting". I enjoyed reading it, but it wasn't amazing... I think it has potential to be something great, but this one fell a bit flat imo.

PS
Chelsea Handlers "My Horizontal Life" was fan freaking tastic! She's not an SP, but she's a bit slutty (Something I can identify with in the most positive sense of the word) and her stories are awesome! I couldn't put the book down and ended up reading it in one night ;)

I like the comic book style on the newspaper...
I often am sure that theres a paralell comic book style life that runs alongside my own life.
I noticed that same comic style in Jenna Jameson's 'How to... Make Love Like a Porn Star A Cautionary Tale.'

Id love to be a talented artist so I could put my paralell universe comic life pics on paper.

Maybe we could meet for a book discussion after reading the novel if youre intersted, Violet?

xoxoxo,

I cringed with self-recognition when I read it (although not because I had an ex-girlfriend like Sook-Yin Lee). It is a bit slight, and doesn't take long to read. I don't know how much an Sp would learn about their clients, though -- you probably know these things already. I do admire the way he counteracts every argument against sex work as a personal choice, which is part of his agenda.

It has zero "unusual" stories, just an illustrated recital of a nice guy's adventures. He deliberately avoids giving himself or his other characters memorable personalities.

I think every sex worker would probably get something out of it, and every client too.

I personally feel that the book offers more to the general public than it does to clients or sp's, it's main focus is to further social and moral acceptance of the trade. Other than the main, the characters are intentionally immemorable... i find the main character to be kind of emotionless and bland at times, more of a way to push the authors agenda rather than entertain the reader.

It's still worth a read though, for the sake of self recognition or seeing your own personal views written out :)
But, I dont think there's much there for sp's to learn about their clients that they dont already know.

Anyways thanks for the post, I'd never have read it otherwise.

Good to know, thanks for the info folks! I may read it just for kicks, but won't expect it to be anything amazing lol. So many books to read, so little time!

And yeah Jessikaxxx, we should do that. Naked book club, perhaps? ;)

I picked it up today as my summer time 'light' read. Since it's in comic book style, it is a pretty easy read and I am about half way through it already.

It is refreshing and note that Chester went through a lot of emotional stuff I did when I was going through a break up after 10 years and when I finally said "fuck it, I will pay for it".

From some of the conversations he had with his SP's I can relate to and I also cringe at some of the things that were said to the ladies. It's quite funny because a lot of the subjects have been brought up here in the Lounge over the years.

I'll pass it on when I am finished to a SP who will also share in irony and humour in the book.

Feel free to borrow my personal, annotated copy, any of you. It's a very quick read, was mildly refreshing for me, and contains essay-style pro-prostitution arguments I mainly agree with in the appendix. I think it would make a great little break from Irvine Welsh, Vi!

You know me too well! lol. I haven't read an Irvine Welsh book in about a year, been trying to broaden my horizons :p But I still tell everyone I know to read Irvine! lol. Maybe I'll borrow your copy of Paying for It when I'm done the book I'm reading now.
