I have a Canadian 2-dollar bill.
That's quite an accomplishment for a Yankee.
When did they stop printing those? (This one says Ottawa 1986.)
I realize that it probably has no value beyond $2, and yet I'm reluctant to spend it for some reason.
I kinda like the rarity and quirkiness of it all.

You can't spend it...

These went out of cirulation in the early 90's...hold onto it for sure....especially if it's an older $2 bill with the scene of eskimos killing a whale on the back....could actually be worth something in 10 years

don't know if true so i will post it under 'urban legend' but, two dollar bills were rare in Alberta because that's what the sp's used to charge and so no self-respecting lady or gent would be caught with a two-dollar bill in their possession.

i've got a paper dollar bill stashed away somewhere ... i think its worth 82 cents?

:)

It was the same in Saskatchewan. No one used them, so the banks in Sask. didn't even order them. The only times they would show up was when a tourist from B.C. or the East would drop one off in the province. There's a book called "Red Lights on the Prairies" where, if memory serves me correctly, this story about $2.00 hookers is discussed.

I'm pretty sure that a Canadian one dollar bill is still worth one dollar. It's still legal tender, however old it is.

It's still legal tender.. The banks or anyone else must take it at it's value.

There are way too many around. Some stupid collector might give you $2.50 for it.

If you keep it for 10 years, inflation will rise faster then the value of the note itself, so you're better off wasting your time finding someone to give you $2.50 for it today, or better yet go buy a slurpee and call it a day.

The loonie and the toonie. -(A dollar coin and two dollar coin to you Yanks) replaced the paper currency for financial reasons.
The paper bills needed to be replaced far more often and became costly enough to warrant changing to coin instead of paper.
Sure - up front, a coin costs more to make, but it also lasts a hell of alot longer.

Side benefits:
Blind people can know what it is easier.
Coin operated devices can accept another coin now.
Harder to counterfiet.

Americans have a hard time letting go of their dollar bills. I got some $1 coins from the US the last time I went to Vegas (no, not the Susan B. Anthony ones). I like the dollar bill as well. I can tip a bill at the front row at a strip club, instead of a min $5 here.
