Going through my home office today and decided I need to do something with the task lighting. I have a couple of halogen strips overhead but don't like them on for an extended period as they tend to through a ton of heat. I've got a floor lamp in one corner and a halogen on the opposite corner of my desk. Works alright but find that as I'm getting older (fuck that sucks) and if I've read a lot my eyes tire out and I get grumpy(er). Took a look at a lighting shop today and they recommended Ott-Lite. The sales chick had some long drawn out spiel about how its full spectrum and closest to natural light, blah blah blah. Maybe its just hard to tell in a showroom FILLED with lights that one is any different than the other but it just looked like another fluorescent lamp.

Would be nice to get some input from someone who owns the technology before I drop $200 on a desk lamp.

I have bought some of those daylight bulbs, they are quite good, very bright mind you. From outside at night the light shining though the window has a bluish cast to it. Best to try it as Stryker says. Its not everyone's cup of tea.

Yup. stryker nailed it. The Vita-Lite, by Dr. ott himself, is a full-spectrum bulb that imitates natural light. Closest you'll likely get to being outdoors. What you really want is just a full-spectrum bulb. You can even get them as 48" fluorescent tubes if ya like.
We use them in our office, and they're great.
The prices on Ott's website seem kinda out-to-lunch though. Try Home Depot.

i replaced all the bulbs in my house with the 'natural light' bulbs ... you can get them at home depot, london drugs or even grocery stores.

they really cut down on the glare and make reading and watching tv better because they're not blasting your eyes out!

the house plants like them too!

Color Corrected Bulbs

I have been using color correct (full spectrum) bulbs in my home for over 8 years. We have a large art collection and you can not believe the difference it makes. The first one we bought we made in Holland and were very pricey. Now you can buy them any where.

If you are lighting art, check out Solux.

ya see....thats why I continue to hang my online hat here at PERB....a lot of you fuckers are pretty damn smart! :)

stopped by the lighting store this morning and bought a desk ott-lite (its a nice lamp and not that much more then a similar non-ott-lite model) a floor lamp and a ott bulb.....have set them up in my office and I have to admit that cool white light is fairly soothing. Will be interesting to see how it looks from the street since I have tinted windows in my office. During the day people can't see shit, I could (and have on occasion  ) sit at my desk naked with no fear of being labeled the neighborhood perv. Different story at night

So full spectrum bulb is just like any regular light bulb except they produce different wavelengths and it doesn't require any special lighting hardware?

Are you using their 5000K bulbs? Which dealer carries Solux in Vancouver? I am very interested in this as my lighting set up is too dim to do anything productive at home during night time. Thanks.
