People who have had more than five oral-sex partners in their lifetime are 250% more likely to have throat cancer than those who do not have oral sex, a new study suggests.

The researchers believe this is because oral sex may transmit human papillomavirus (HPV), the virus implicated in the majority of cervical cancers.

The new findings should encourage people to consistently use condoms during oral sex as this could protect against HPV, the team says. Other experts say that the results provide more reason for men to receive the new HPV vaccine.

Maura Gillison at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland, US, and colleagues collected blood and saliva samples from the throats of 100 patients diagnosed with cancers of the tonsils or back of the throat. The scientists also took samples from 200 healthy people for comparison.

By combining the blood and saliva samples with antibody molecules, Gillison's team could tell whether a person had ever had an HPV infection.

And the next study will be that giving oral sex WITH a condom causes cancer due to the latex or spermacide .... the fact is ... every day you wake up - you take a day off of your life. Live, love & laugh !

***LOGICAL ERROR - FAIL***

your headline is illogical. oral sex cannot cause throat cancer - HPV can cause throat cancer

you can be sloppy with your use of the language elsewhere on this site or on the Internet in general, but i would think in the health section that you would strive to get it right

Know what else causes cancer? Everything!

There isnt nearly enough data given for this to be meaningful information. It's simple for the media to twist things by supplying the public with numbers that sound impressive and drastic. Few people truly understand statistics and the media loves it.

True breathing seems to cause cancer these days even lol but it is good for people to know this too so that if they choose to get vaccinated they can cut down on some chances for throat cancer, its at least one thing in peoples control...

Hi Nowthinkintwice

There certainly is growing evidence about HPV and throat cancer. Currently we still need a few mores pieces of the puzzle to know the full risk. The study you linked to is another piece of the puzzle.

In the study you posted they suggested that men should get the HPV vaccine. As you will see below there is no data on whether the HPV vaccine would prevent oral cancers associated with HPV. There still needs to be some research in this area.

If this is a concern, people could reduce their risk by using a barrier for oral sex like a condom or dental dam. Not performing oral sex would also be another option. In our STI risk chart we listed DFK and HPV transmission as low risk after speaking with one of our doctors. This means mouth to mouth transmission is possible but appears to be less of a risk than oral sex.

Commander Chode thanks for linking to the information in the health forum. I have cut and pasted the information from the similar question you asked.

Hi Commander Chode

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you. I sent your questions to one of our doctors who has a lot of experience with HPV. Here is her response.

Do you have any updates on HPV and oral/throat cancer?

Not necessarily understood to be the only cause, but is associated with oral HPV infection, along with smoking and alcohol use. There is no data on whether the HPV vaccine would prevent oral cancers associated with HPV.

Are there stats for HPV and cancer in men?

HPV has been associated with anal, oral and penile cancer in men.

Anal:
Anal cancer is not common. There are about 600 cases in Canada each year. In BC (2005) 28 men were diagnosed with anal cancer and 3 died. Smoking is a contributing factor as well as HPV. Good results with early treatment which means see a doctor if you have problems with your bowels or anus.

Penis:
Cancer of the penis is rare. Smoking and HPV are contributing factors. Good results with treatment if found early, this means see doctor if any lesion on penis.

Oral:
In BC (2008) 518 people were diagnosed with oral cancer, 352 men and 166 female. Contributing factors are tobacco, alcohol (heavy drinking), exposure to epstein-barr virus, HPV and eating a steady diet of salt-cured meats and fish. If you have any symptoms of the throat like lumps or pain that last more than 2 weeks make sure you see the doctor.

It seems that with cancers in men the best prevention is to see the doctor sooner rather than later if concerned about something and that it is never too late to give up smoking.

If concerned about cancer the BC cancer agency is a great resource.

If someone wanted to get the HPV vaccine is it possible and how much would it cost?

You can get the vaccine from any doctor.

The best deal I could find in Vancouver is from Options for Sexual Health (used to be Planned Parenthood)

They have the vaccine at their Vancouver clinic and only charge $135 dollars per shot ($405 total). They provide it at wholesale price. They also offer discount birth control and STI testing at their clinics. All people are welcome.

Here is a link to information on their Vancouver clinic. You can also call their sex-sense line 1-800-sex-sense to discuss the vaccine or other sexual health issues.

Hi J_Bunny

I agree. The media can give us some good information but sometimes I feel they grab something for its shock value.

This can happen when they make headlines from one research study. One medical research study is usually just one piece of a very large puzzle.

I also love the way stats are used for many things. For example 100% increase, does that mean we had 2 cases last year and it is now 4 cases.

At the end of the day, we still need more information before we can determine what the risk of getting oral cancer is when you have oral sex.

seem like everything we do, end up biting us in the ass... it's like lock yourself up and throw away the keys and live a healthy but boring as hell life :(
Finnaly someone gets it.... Thats right on the Money.... The Govt wants us to lock ourselves up and throw away the keys and live a healthy but boring as hell life.
That way we get to pay taxes for another 50 years.... they dont want us to die right away, and they sure dont want anyone to get rich, which is why taxes are increased every year while personal income remains the same over decades.

My best advice is to place an ad in casual encounters which states you are a Sugar Daddy looking for a special girl who loves Porn Star Sex and the taste of CUM Often, Hahahahah. In exchange for her weekly Facials and Protien Injections from my cock, I will reward her with gifts....

This works out to be much cheaper than paying for a pro, and the girls are very inexperienced but eager to learn a few things.. One you have found the girl of your dreams chances are anything is possible with consent... BB all the way baby... xoxoxoxo

Hi Plude

I really hope I did not give this impression.

Sex is a really good thing with many positive's.

In our multi media lives it can be difficult to know what to do as we are continually bombarded with information; “do this” don't do this”.

Like many things in life there will always be some level of risk and what we are looking at is what can you do to avoid the larger dangers.

Sometimes I think we sweat the small details, but remember currently Canadians are healthier and live longer than we ever have.
