Putin signed a law declaring only Russian sparkling wine may be called champagne. French producers were told to label their champagne as sparkling wine. Only Moët will comply and all other producers have halted shipments to Russia.

It will be interesting to see who blinks first. French producers are sitting on a million bottle inventory due to reduced sales during COVID. Will Russian high rollers drink Russian sparkling wine?

Never been a big fan of it myself. The thing is every other wine producing country has honoured France’s ownership of the word champagne because that’s the region where grapes are grown.

This is just Putin flipping the bird at Macron.
