Calgay Flames jump the lines and get their H1N1 flu shot for them and their
families. Now everyone is up in arms, raising a Big stink over it.

What were they thinking

How could they do something like this

90% of the people complaining would have done the EXACT SAME THING

If I were given the chance to get the shot for myself and my family I would have done it.
no questions asked. Sure maybe some with out families could have said "Nahh i'll wait"
But is it really their fault that the Alberta Government is so stupid?....

Can you imangine the gong show at the clinc if the flames showed up to stand in line for shots ? They had to get their shots in private its only common sense.

As well their job is to entertain thousands of people by playing hockey, I hate the flames but even still if the team gets the flu and cannot play how many thousands of people would be screaming about cancelled games ?

Just another perfect example of the media trying to stir up shit and sensationalize things to get attention. And they just didnt say come here and give us the shots it was set up days or even weeks in advance its not like it just happened so there was no shortage or restrictions going when it was all set up to be done originally.

you have a team who is in close contact with each other. more so than the average person. if you take into consideration the amount of people the team itself is having contact with, not only in calgary but all over canada and the united states. calgary plays 14 times in november so you figure 14 teams with 20 or so people on each team coming into contact with the team, who is therefore in contact with their families, friends, strippers, and prostitutes. the potential for wide spread infection is greater than say someone working in an office, or a school who is in contact with the same people every day.'

even if one player is infected and not showing symptoms plays say 2 or 3 games before actually becoming ill has the potential to infect over a hundred people. now imagine a whole team infected?

really though. it wasnt a big deal until someone made a big deal about it

Sports teams and athletes always get special treatment. Same with movie stars. Does not surprise me but it is a bit of a bad PR move when the news is filled with teenagers dying from swine flu.

For the general public, the definition of "high risk" is someone that has the highest chance of dying if they get the disease. It is not necessarily a matter of who is most likely to come into contact with the disease since that is, essentially, everyone.

In fact, hockey players are more likely to recuperate much quicker than the average person since they usually live a healthier lifestyle.

I am sorry to hear that you think that a hockey player's life is more important than a child or pregnant woman.

I heard the Calgary Health Authority fired two of their employees who arranged for the vaccinations.

I agree the optics not good for the Flames. While the travel, close contact does increase their risk of getting the bug jumping the line over little kids, pregnant mums, very sick people looks bad.

I think the Flames should have had their shots done on a road trip or something in the States. Where it wouldn't be a big deal.

The Flames are a business, competing with other businesses.
All the US based teams have access to all medical services.

This is why Canadian sport teams get to jump queues for everything, from seeing a knee specialist to getting in an MRI next day.

Can you imagine. LA King injures his knee, back in action in 6 weeks
Oiler injures his knee, will see specialist in 8 months, should return to hockey middle of next season.

Firing people over this seems a little suspect. Hockey players are allowed to jump the queue on everything else medically, and this is all fine and dandy with the government and health associations. Yet early shots at a private clinic, before it was clear there was shortages gets you fired?

These 2 people fired are total scapegoats.

Measuring RISK

As stated by leelee, the risk that we should be concerned about is the risk of DYING and their families. Those under six, those who are pregnant and those with respiratory aliments.

Secondly I'd say that we should ensure that those who perform a service (Fire/Ambulance/Police) should get vaccinated in order to ensure that 30% of that service isn't off sick. That would definitely have a negative repercussion on society.

Thirdly attack the high concentrations of people to help prevent person to person contact.
Schools from Elementary to University should then be vacinated.

Of course our minister of health is a clueless tool who wouldn't understand planning if if hit him straight between the eyes.

Don't blame the flames - they certainly showed insensitivity and completely obtuse public relations...but they don't control the vaccination program.

Blame Alberta Health for letting it happen. Unfortunately, a couple of rank civil servants are the scapegoats and sacrificial lambs, and not the stuffed shirts in charge.

Professional teams DO NOT jump queues when it comes to MRIs and other diagnostic testing. They pay for it privately, something that you and I can do if we are willing to pay
