Do you feel proud that our athletes are doing well?
Do you feel pride in being a true Canadian?

If so, you are retarded.

You feel proud of something you haven't accomplished in your own life. You take this pride on by proxy. If you want to feel proud, go out and accomplish it yourself.

Go out and do something that makes a difference. Pull your lazy ass away from the TV and do something that matters.

Every single individual who is competing in the games, is under a banner of their country, but doing it for themselves.

If we are to have pride in others, we need to put aside superficial boundaries such as countries and borders and focus on the lives of the individuals.

Get out of your clique, team, country mindset. Individuals are what counts.

its pretty impressive how many medals the canadians are bringing home in comparison to other countries that pay to train athletes. what you are forgetting markl is that alot of these athletes start at an early age. its pretty hard for anyone 18+ to go out and try to compete for a spot to represent a country when others have had a 10-15 year head start on training. we applaud those that took the time and effort to train at a young age, and they are rewarded with recognition for being the top of their game. we should all be proud of the canadian athletes for representing canada, but we should always have pride in the country regardless of the olympics or not

Why do you assume that being proud of the Canadian athletes automatically means that one does not have pride in themselves? How about team sports for example if one of my team mates accomplishes a great feat I should not share in his accomplishment? Am I stupid for passing the puck to him so that he can score?

I agree with you that athletes are not heroes but their dedication in the pursuit of excellence is something that should be recognized. You are a martial artist and you should know that not all black belts are equal. However if they are in a proper school each individual will be pushed to his/her limit to attain their goal. A 52 year old black belt rarely has the physical prowess of a 17 year old however both are recognized for their achievements.

Anyone who pursues an athletic endeavor and reaches the pinnacle of their sport should be lauded for their tenacity and strength as they suffered through the obstacles that life threw in their way.

jsyk. I noticed a story about an attempt to have pole dancing introduced as a demonstration sport in 2012. Perhaps you can indeed become an Olympian ;-)

Umm OK, but I'm just as proud of the Special Olympic athletes, what does that make me? And I bet I could kick their asses at any of the sports! :rolleyes:

I'm not glorifying or holding these Olympic athletes up to be heroes, and I don't go for all the hype by the media, but I'm damn proud of these Canadians and every athlete at the games. The goals and desires to be the best with the work and sacrifice that goes with it should not be any different than the ideals we can have in every day life and careers. Whether triumphs, failures or heartbreak; these people inspire us and show it is noble to try.

I think Markl and Kendra might be forgetting all the people that work as coaches, chauffeurs, cooks, organizers, "ie parents" to all these events to which the KIDS attended when they were KIDS. Yes they are no longer kids but hopefully they'll remember how they got to where they are now and give some of there knowledge back to the sport that gave them so much. So when i cheer on Canada i'm not just cheering the athlete, i'm also cheering the path that brought them there. It doesn't sound as though either of you have children, for some of my best memories were watching the 87 Canada Cup with my family as a kid, and now I have the chance to watch the games with my son.

When I see someone watching any sport and a Canadian wins, or the Oilers win a hockey game. They go "Yeah! We won!"
I don't get where the hell they think it is "We" in there. Did we contribute to their success somehow that escaped me? Why do we feel like we accomplished the victory?
"We" didn't do shit. The athlete did the work. I respect them for that, but I don't feel like I shared part of their victory. I didn't train for it.

Go Oilers Go! How many hockey players on the Oilers are from Edmonton?

Let me take this a bit more out there. If you know a friend who isn't a professional athlete, but just ran a 10k in 40 minutes. Do you take the same pride in them?
Oh yes, btw.. I have ran a 10k in 40 mins. Not for a few years, but I have. I felt most proud of myself.

I "respect" each and every athlete, their dedication and hard work to be sure, but if a Canadian wins, or a Russian, Japanese, whatever. It makes no difference, and it shouldn't.

I consider this "pride" a leftover from the days when people lived in clans and supported each other to survive. It is detrimental in some respects to modern society.

If you don't "get" this, you aren't retarded, merely haven't thought about it enough.

One can say the same about those who follow entertainment news aka celebrity gossip - who's negotiating to be in which film, what's your favorite starlet is wearing on the red carpet, who she's fucking this week, who's gonna win an Oscar, celebrity diet/bulimia tips, etc.

The "we" in sports is just an expression of mutual support of the team. The Oilers are "our" team. Team Canada is "our" team.

Rather they are a collection of individuals who play for a location.

What people feel when "Their Team" wins, is a purely emotional response, and not that well thought out.
I get it, you know. I used to feel that way myself whenever Montreal would win at hockey... long since quelled that though.

Well, if you put it that way:
In the case of the Oilers, we the fans are "owners" in an indirect sense that we pay for tickets, season passes, pay-per-view and whatnot. We buy the beer, food, vehicles and media services from the businesses that sponsor them. We shop at drug stores owned by Katz. Depending on how the downtown arena ownership and funding shakes out, taxpayers' money might be in the mix. Essentially we help pay the players' salaries.

Eskimos? Almost the same above, save for the fact that they are a "community-owned" team.

Team Canada at the Olympics? Our taxes help fund "Own The Podium".
