Nothing new
The New Orleans police have been known for 20 years to be the most corrupt and ill-disciplined force in a major US city. The NYPD has had a few bad apples, and the LAPD had huge ssues with racism, but consensus was throughout the US that New Orleans police were the worst.
You may recall that a number of witnesses came forward after Hurricane Katrina to claim that some police JOINED the looting. There was also a questionable "recquisitioning" of some Cadillacs off a dealership lot, the claim being made that the officers needed patrol cars as theirs were destroyed by the hurricane or flooding.
Now, I can see that the decent police officers had a bad time of it during the hurricane, but to beat on a 64 year old man? To beat on a member of the press who isn't interfering in the arrest and who has produced his press credentials? It's just weak.
I hateto say it, but a lot of cops are all about the power trip: they'll take it to someone who is defenseless....this is pretty standard (and it is far worse) in 3rd World countries (not that I condone it there), but to see it in America or Canada is pretty upsetting.
The nice thing about VPD and the RCMP by and large is that they are upstanding if sometimes a bit ineffective
