oh I did it really good yesterday :(

The wonders of multi tasking. Its amazing what us ladies can get done in a matter of minutes. Quite often my friends and I will time check eachother - " 15 minutes, until he comes "

" LOTS IF TIME !!"

Well in my 10 minute or so count down, I was finishing a few things, and put q tips in my ears [yep, :( ]

And in the midst of putting product in my hair, ect ect, I bashed one of them( right side ) right down into my ear !! The immediate shock and pain was so intense, like stubbing a toe, I thought I honestly busted through to my brain. When I plug my nose and blow, I can hear the air coming straight through out my ear and my hearing is slightly off on the right side now.

I screamed every bad word I know, in my head, bit my tongue, threw some cold water on my face, and opened the door. He offered ( my client ) to reschedule but I figured, what was the doctor immediately going to do to me anyhow? It's not like he can thrown a band aid in there, and once the initial sting was gone I was alright. Well for the most part, Except when I burp it hurts a bit.

Any one ever done this ? Will my hearing come right back, or eventually come back ? I havnt gone to a walk in clinic yet, but I will soon though when it opens.

Any Intel greatly appreciated.

Thank you. XO - LV

OUCH....it sounds likely that you have a ruptured eardrum, and yes, it needs to be taken seriously! Please see your doctor. Good luck and I'm sorry to hear you're going through this!

I suggest going to Emerg. It's very limited what walk in clinic can do for you.

You should go see your doctor to get checked out. The good news is, if you have punctured or ruptured the tympanic membrane (ear drum), it will actually heal quite well on its own. The amount of time it takes depends on the extent of the damage. They will likly put you on some Tylenol or Advil for the pain, maybe an antibiotic or ear drop depending on the doctor, to prevent bacteria in the ear canal from creating a middle ear infection.

(In my previous life, I've seen a few guys with ruptured ear drums caused by not wearing proper ear protection during explosives detonation. They all healed well as far as I remember).

Cheers

Yeah you should see your doctor. It happened to me once. I had a ruptured ear drum when I jammed the Q tip too far in with too much force. Will take time to recover. A couple of weeks maybe.

Hey Babe, There is good news and bad news.
Your ear drum will heal, http://www.webmd.com/pain-management/ruptured-eardrum-symptoms-and-treatments
Another common cause of a ruptured eardrum is poking the eardrum with a foreign object, such as a cotton-tipped swab or a bobby pin that's being used to clean wax out of the ear canal. Sometimes children can puncture their own eardrum by putting objects such as a stick or a small toy in their ear.

How Is a Ruptured Eardrum Treated?

Typically, no specific treatment is needed for a ruptured eardrum; the vast majority of ruptured eardrums heal within three months. Your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic -- either oral or in the form of eardrops -- to prevent an ear infection or treat an existing infection. If the ruptured eardrum is causing you pain, the doctor may recommend using an over-the-counter pain medication such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Warmth may be applied also to relieve discomfort.

If the eardrum is slow to heal, the doctor may put a patch over the eardrum. In some cases, surgery may be needed to repair a ruptured eardrum. The surgery is usually done on an outpatient basis. During the procedure, which usually takes a couple of hours, the doctor will attach a piece of your own tissue to the eardrum to rebuild the eardrum. Surgery is most commonly used for large perforations, for perforations that involve the edges of the eardrum, or for ruptured eardrums caused by an ear infection.

While the eardrum heals, you'll need to keep the ear dry. That means no swimming or diving until the doctor says the eardrum is healed. You'll also need to use a shower cap or place cotton coated with petroleum jelly in your outer ear when you shower to keep water out.
You need to wear earplugs when showering. The best ones are found in the Dollar Store for 100 for $1.25. If you insist on paying too much, they are available @ 200 for $43.00 at an Industrial First Aid Store. You roll the earplug in your palms so that it's skinny, insert in your ear and the earplug then expands to fill your ear canal.

Everyone keeps warning people not to put Q-Tips or Bobby Pins in our ears and none of us listen until we have damaged our hearing and, worse, our balance. http://commonhealth.wbur.org/2012/11/q-tips-ears-danger

You can damage your ears to the point where you cannot stand in the shower because you will have no balance at all if your eyes are closed. I've seen it happen with commercial divers who's eardrums were damaged by repeated pressure changes.

You've seen commercial drivers lose their balance while closed eyed in the shower? What a colourful life you've led!

Joking aside, that sounds horrible, LV. Hope you've seen a doctor and received some sound advice ;)

See your doctor or go to emergency NOW.

Not a joke! A perforated eardrum is an open pathway to inner ear infection, which can far more serious than an earache.

I had vertigo for a week and it was the worst thing you could imagine. If it had gone on much longer I would have killed myself.

Get checked out.

When I shower, I have to touch an elbow to the shower wall if I close my eyes. If you damage your inner ear, you lose your ability to balance without eyes or touch to guide you. It's a pain in the ass when you are toweling your head also.

Oh there was no doubt in my mind that I ruptured it, and as I thought, just keep it dry and there's not much else one can do for it. :) thank goodness I've got a spare ear & Thank you for the messages, I figured it would probably heal on its own as I remember the lady who peirced my tongue the first time tell me that our bodies heal the parts we use a lot quickly. Granted I don't use my ear quite like my tongue but it is an important part of my body so I guessed that my body would prioritize it as an important part to heal.

I'm actually not in pain. I can most certainly feel it and feel some pressure when I burp or cough but it's not pain. The first minute or so was really bad, and of course right when I answered my buzzer, so my eyes were bugged right out of their sockets when my guest arrived, but I'm actually a pretty tough chick and I've experienced far greater pain from other injuries over the years so I'm actually quite all right considering :)

no headphones, rock concerts, raves, & booming deaf tone club beats for a while. there goes my weekend plans .......... so long as I cAn still hear those little birdies chirping in the morning, or when I'm out on my nature walk I'll get on just fine :)

You did have a Doctor take a look? Right? Don't be so tough that you don't take care of yourself.

Yes sir ! I did. I also picked up some extra ear plugs, tighter fitting ones. I had the lady at the pharmacy help me pick out good ones.

Hearing from others here that have been through this and came out all right was comforting to me, so thanks again. :) I obviously did some googling myself but that's never the same as hearing someone else's first hand experience with it all.

I made a point of contacting the people I know with little kids today. Just to remind them of the dangers if q tips and Not have them with in reach anywhere.

Ouch!! i pushed a Q tip in a little to far once and the pain was awful, i can only imagine what you went through. You better go get it checked, that would make a sizeable hole.

Sorry to hear about your injury....No pun intended.

I also read you have purchased earplugs, but I thought I'd pass this along to you.
You can purchase silicone rubber earplugs at KMS Tools in Coquitlam for something like under 3.00, and they have 4 soft ribs that fit even the smallest ear canal ,with comfort.
After wearing them for awhile, you can throw them in the pocket of your jeans, and run them through the wash...They'll even survive a dryer run, but I don't recommend it.
I don't remember the name brand of them ,but they have 4 soft cups degrading to a cone on top, and are bright yellow, and come with a white round plastic case. They are a saftey item so you'll find it with the repirators next to the foam earplugs...The foam ones absorb bacteria, and moisture BTW...Which is why they are disposable.

For the record...Your just as beautiful ,even with half the hearing.

Glad the outcome seems positive. It's amazing how much we take our senses for granted until something like this happens. Heal fast :)

The part im adjusting to, having one ear plugged all the time, is which direction is my phone when it's beeping. ? I'm automatically looking to my left instead of my right. I do wear ear plugs. I used to wear them to sleep as I had a long term partner with a terrible snoring problem ! I've also popped them into my ears from time to time while shopping or when I've gone out to a noisy place. Pure silence can be refreshing at times.

Putting off the trampoline stuff is sad. I've been to the. Indoor place in Richmond s few times, and love it there!! It's so much fun and brings back childhood memories. I found another place in surrey ( I believe ) that also offers a trampoline excercise class of sorts and I've been longing to try it out, but I've been instructed not too as its too much pressure right now. :( On a positive note, as I always try to find some form of positive regardless of how thick the Negative is , I've got some fun days to look forward to in the future, :)
