Obama: Renewal of America's Promise

From time to time, just when it seems they have run out of the world's goodwill, America pulls a surprise out of the bag. Last November, with two inconclusive wars still in progress and the world gripped in the downward spiral of financial crisis, Americans elected Barack Obama to the presidency. And the world has simply fallen in love with the man and the American Way once more.

Millions crammed Washington D.C., many of them traveling for days to be an anonymous face in the crowd. But that is not what is truly impressive: billions of people around the world watched the proceedings, feeling they were truly part of the celebrations and the hopefulness. This was a spectacle unprecedented in its reach, its impact and in its profoundly unifying themes. The Obama inauguration theme was Renewal of America's Promise - one that resonates not only with the American people but with the world's.

During the last few decades it has been quite fashionable to fault America: for its wastefulness, for its bullying, and sometimes for its stupidity. But over those same decades, we have realized that when America is weak the rest of the world cannot be strong. Barack Obama ( a technopile, a man of color, a politician of soaring rhetoric ) brings a refreshing new look into what is possible in the world we share. At a time when there seems to be a surfeit of despair, Obama personifies that gnawing suspicion that the world could be a better place - but only if it is better led. However, the expectations on Obama could be too large. He could not, after all, walk over water. But we all desperately need to imagine him to be greater than he could possibly be. For our own sake. :)

perhaps

if obama is successful we will all be better off. he faces many challenges. the financial crisis is worse than during the depression, the car industry may be on its last legs, unemployment is higher than it has been in decades, the american people are expecting miracles..overnight..no president has faced this many challenges of such magnitude.

there are those that will sit back and wait for him to fail and then point a finger...but those people have not accepted the truth...if he fails we are all in for a rough ride.

i was surprised that when he was asked to take the oath of office that he did not just put his hands up and say "thanks but no thanks'. he is in a no win situation..we should all be rooting for his success...the alternative is unthinkable

I mean whats the point in dropping facts in your face. You just say it doesnt exist or its a conspiracy theory.

Oh look hes stopping torture. Go look at what the definiton of torture is. It says anything that can bring on organ failure. So if your detained and your tied down to a bed in an uncomfortable position for a few hours/days, by law that is NOT torture. All hes doing is taking underground out of sight so you sheeple will think he actually stopped it. What do you sheep mean when you say "Yes We Can"? You needed a black con man to motivate you out of your flouridated zombie like state to finally take a look at politics. Good fucking lord that is pathetic.

I just found it hilarious yesterday when I was watching Peachtree TV from Atlanta, and a commercial came on for a commemorative Obama 24K collector coin...

I mean, seriously, he's been in office for 2 days, and they're already doing this? Give me a frigging break...

Not that I don't like the guy or anything, but at least wait a year until he's actually, I don't know, DONE SOMETHING with his new position???

You're far behind the times, man. That collector coin from The Franklin Mint was available for purchase LONG before The Big O's inauguration; in fact, I think it was available not too long after the night he won the election.
Seriously???
What a joke...

Sure everyone has their flaws but......

Sure everyone has their flaws but what are the alternatives? That's always the hard question.

I think the positive and calming energy that the election of Obama has brought to the world is a really great thing all by itself.

Much better than most of the world having the opinion that the president of the US is some drooling monster from hell.

Even though I think Bush will be seen in a little bit better light far into the future. The world needs to feel that America is becoming a little more benevolent.

There is no doubt however that if things turn for the worse Obama will be crucified and eaten by his own loving followers.

The Aug. 1, 2002 memo, sent from Assistant Attorney General Jay S. Bybee to Alberto R. Gonzales, counsel to the president, parsed the language of a 1994 statute that ratified the United Nations Convention against Torture and made the commitment of torture a crime. To be torture, the memo concluded, physical pain must be "equivalent in intensity to the pain accompanying serious physical injury, such as organ failure, impairment of bodily function, or even death." And inflicting that severe pain, according to the memo, must have been the "specific intent" of the defendant to amount to a violation of the statute. Human rights groups reacted with horror when the Bybee memo was leaked to the press in June 2004, and it was quietly rescinded by the Justice Department on Dec. 30, 2004, just days before Gonzales was to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee on his nomination as attorney general of the United States. (Meanwhile, Bybee in 2003 had been nominated and confirmed as a judge on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.)

Honestly I can't believe the stuff I hear on tv. Making this guy out to be the messiah or something. The United States is pretty much a two party dictatorship. You have either pepsi or coke to choose from. If people think for a minute obama is running the show need to step back and look at the situation. The America is pretty much runned by private banks they pull the strings not Obama. Don't get me wrong bush was a idiot but I find it funny how for the last few year the democrats haven't really done anything to ge in the way of the republicans. I hope to god i'm wrong and maybe obama is what you see but I hardly believe it. The democrats and the republicans have been running that country for decades. I just hope the american public keeps their awareness and doesn't fall into false stae oh okay we can go back to our lives and resume it. I think these next few months we'll see what the democrats are going to pass through. I've heard somethings that might be on the backburner but, I hope i'm wrong.

It's still not the definition of torture. If anybody's arrested in the USA and officers do what they've done at Gitmo the officers will likely face jail time (and the conviction go out the window on their suspects) because they're torturing.

All Obama has to do is apply existing law. Alberto Gonzales was acting outside it.
Ok so why dont you just copy and paste what the definition is then. Have no clue what you said above.
