I very much enjoy getting BBBJs but am concerned if I get an STI such as Chlamydia or Gonorrhea, it may hurt my relationship with my SO. If I do test positive for Chlamydia or Ghonorrhea, but I am not currently have sex with my SO, would she still need to be notified? If so, how does the notification process work?

Hi sagacious

I can give you some information about what happens in the place that I work.

This is a common concern that I get from many men that visit the clinic.

If you test positive for gonorrhea or chlamydia we recommend that all sex partners in the last two months should get a test and treatment. The two month time period is a suggestion but everyone’s situation may be different. For example you had sex with somebody three months ago and it has been a long time since you had a test.

If you tested positive you will only need to discuss this with your sexual partners. If you are not having sex with your steady partner (SO) there is no need to tell them.

There are a few different way that you can tell your sex partners.

(1) Tell them yourself. (We can help coach people with this)
(2) Send them an e-card (with or without your name) http://www.bccdc.ca/SexualHealth/Programs/Inspot/default.htm
(3) The health care provider that tested you can usually contact them and leave your details private.
(4) Tell them with a health professional in the room with you.

This can be difficult with steady partners who are only having sex with you as there is a very good chance they will work out who the person is if told by a health care provider. In this situation we usually recommend talking with your steady partner yourself.

That is the answer for the above question. For other people who may be reading I just wanted to point out that;

Most men will get symptoms to gonorrhea if it is in the penis but we find for most other places throat, vagina and anus, a person would get no symptoms. With chlamydia we find most people do not get symptoms. Given this we tend to be more cautious and recommend people to get tested and treated if there could have been a chance. Especially since woman can develop pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) if gonorrhea or chlamydia is left untreated.
