So you guys think the problem is big government? Pull your head out of your ass because the reality is that Translink is the result of big government (provincial) relinquishing control and creating essentially a small government institution to be the transit authority. So guess what? Your little government institution has no direct representation of its electorate and thus you have NO SAY. So much for the supporters of small government. It doesn't work, they have become their own taxation authority with the ability to levy taxes from you directly without your say. You need comprehensive and unified control of taxation where the electorate have direct say of who governs, and that would be at the provincial/state level.

On a more relevant note, I used to hold a contract with Translink. I'd walk into their offices every day and watch those ass fuckers lounge around all day "working" on projects I knew had no end with the employees being accountable to nobody but themselves. Furthermore, they hated contractors like me because even when I worked at half my pace, I was far more efficient than they were at getting things done. Their whole mentality is to create work for themselves and protect jobs, hire underskilled people as employees so that senior people would not be threatened, and waste vast amounts of money on administrative infrastructure so that employees can "move up". This is why Translink has no control over their spending - no one has ever done an audit of their projects. Furthermore, they create projects without end and subscribe funds to them from a general pool. When they put a vote on increased taxes, they don't tie it to a project with a specific deadline and results. When (and if) the project does end, they continue to tax the same amount. What a bunch of fucking assholes. They need to destroy Translink and start from the beginning, or better yet, put the transit authority and taxation back into the hands of the provincial government.

In case you haven't noticed, we've got a bad case of the congestion blues and everyone agrees something needs to be done about it. But, of course, when it comes time to pay for it, well....that's a different story.
You've missed the point......on top of what the users pay.....
TransLink receives: $235.3 million in property tax revenue, $16.8 million in a hydro levy, $257.5 million in fuel tax revenue and $302.8 million in transit fare revenue.
In total TransLink receives $844 million each year.
I have no problem paying my taxes (well, okay, I actual do) but there is something clearly wrong when these assholes continue to go to the well for more. Whining? Hardly. Some jobs (ie: mine) require you to be in several different locales during the course of a given day and the transit system cannot support that activity. Penalizing the people who find themselves in that position with further fees and taxes is not the answer. One idea would be to apply the tolls on weekends, which would eliminate a ton of non-essential traffic and still yield significant dollars for whatever else they want to waste money on like traffic lights on minor side streets that cross major arteries. You know, the ones that turn red and stop traffic for no fucking reason at all. Mind you I'm just a bit biased since I park my vehicle pretty much all weekend. They should also raise the speed limit and triple speeding fines, raise the licensing age to 19, restrict trucks of a certain size to using the right lane at all times, and don't allow left turns when there's not a left turn lane and/or signal.

You guys don't get it, but I can't say I blame you. After all, being raised in North America where driving a car seemed a birthright, makes it doubley difficult to adjust, now that the party's coming to an end.
You think you pay a lot for the priviledge of driving? You ain't seen nothing yet.

Remember it is still super cheap in NA compared to other advanced countries. But now that the true costs of car culture to our health and to the environment (and to American soldiers) become apparent, everybody's looking to blame someone else.

Like the guy said, pay me now or pay me later, but you're gonna pay.
