We even email each other in our office. I communicate with people by email, that are in freakin' speaking distance to me. I have a family member in the same city as me, constantly talking to me by email. Haven't had a phone call in months from them though. Am I the only one that finds this situation FUBAR?

Text Messaging instead of just talking on the phone, what is up with that?

Its simple enough to understand, it comes down to bandwidth. I can communicate with multiple people at the same time when using IM's or emails vs. only one when talking on the phone.

I know what you mean.
A while ago I'm talking to a friend and they commented that I didn't respond to their text message a few days earlier. I told them I don't check that or even know how to use it. If you want to talk to me, then call me. You can't tell me it's easier to sit there typing your message into a cellphone keypad rather than just calling.
I call alot of these people TechnoSnobs. They don't need the technology but use it just to show others they have it and can use it.
The other reason for alot of this is that it gives people a barrier to hide behind. It is easier to talk to someone, especially if it is bad news or confrontational, by e-mail or text message than in person. We all know from this board that lots of people say things from behind a keyboard they would never say to your face.

Whenever I see a table of people all on their cells I think they are probably talking to each other.

All the texting, e-mailing, and messaging used to bug me, but I've gotten used to it and even like it sometimes. I think it works best in a work setting, when you just want to ask someone one thing -- texting is relatively slow, and cell phone displays are so small that it encourages brevity. Another advantage is that you don't have to interrupt the person during dinner or whatever, so they can answer at their convenience. For example, I've found texting handy if I have a message for someone and it's dinner time or after 10 PM and I don't know if they're awake or not.

As for messaging, we do that to each other all the time at work too. It's great for talking about people behind their back :)! It's also good for giving people account numbers, telephone numbers, IP addresses, etc. because you have a visual record of the conversation (so if they said something important you can save it on your to-do list), and you can copy and paste important information into another software program.

I do agree that I don't like it so much in a social setting though. One of my friends, who I'm sure has my cell # on one of her distribution lists, texted everyone to say Merry Christmas. How lame is that?

To quote Todd Bertuzzi though, "it is what it is." *shrug*

I can text message 12 words to my GF during the day and she's happy I'm thinking of her. I'm happy she's happy.

And I don't have to listen to what happened to her at the grocery store, or what her boss said earlier in the day, or what her roomate's new shoes look like, and I don't have to worry that she's going to be listening to everything say and get all bent out of shape because I go uh-huh a lot, or am not really listening ( because - DUH - I'm at work! ) or have to deal with co-workers with big ears listening in.

And from personal experience I will have to follow those e-mail with up to 6 personal meetings or, even worse, group meetings because text is not face to face and 90% of your message gets lost. So, longer time to complete than just talking to them in the first place.

So you use text messaging so that you don't have to talk to your girlfriend? Um, why don't you just dump her if you don't like her??

I get verbal replies to certain emails.....when the respondent doesn't want their replies documented ( lawyers especially)...

Never said I didn't like her. I very much do.

And I spend a great deal of time talking to her.
But not in the middle of the frikken day when I've got my boss chewing my ass and 30 things that need to be done yesterday many of which can involve handling dangerous materials or other ways be downright lethal if I'm not giving it my full attention.

Now while I think that should be enough explanation as to why I didn't call up to spend 30 minutes talking about trivial stuff that neither of us considers important, in her world that isn't a good reason. Because it's not about the conversation, it's about the call, and failing to make the call, or being terse and brief during the call, translate into "boyfriend doesn't care".

So I send a text message. She's happy. I'm happy. And I actually get to remain employed and in possession of all my limbs.

That's one of the reasons why I use e-mails. Learned too often that shit runs down hill and I'm at the bottom, so that if I don't have some proof that it was the higher-ups brilliant idea that FUBAR'd I'm screwed.
