Here's a Samsung for $55 at NCIX http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=32117&vpn=ML-1640%2FXAA&manufacture=Samsung&promoid=1042 ; sometimes there is a lineup when goto the store. Samsung is pretty average printer nothing spectacular but, cheap thou. Hp is not bad either. Don't touch Lexmark.
They have specials every wed. after 7pm and one day sat. specials. Hope that helps.

Before you buy, determine how much refill toner cartridges cost. Some of them are an arm and a leg.

for your responses and advice. My previous true-and-trusted workhorse HP 5L provided an excellent experience so I have always leaned towards HP. But, I will have a look at the Samsung cheapie.

Samsung isn't bad
I have in past used a Samsung ML-1750, it was compatible with Linux, Mac, and Windows. Some of the printer (Laser) required you to replace the drum and toner separately which was pricey. The ML-1750 was about a 100 bucks for the cartridge and it was a all-in-one unit (drum and toner in one package).
Any variant of that line will likely be pretty reliable and not very expensive to buy or refill.

HP 5L was a good printer, they knew how to make'um back then. Now, it doesn't really matter which printer you buy; all the new consumer printers are made cheaply even the newer HPs. Cartridges are usually in $75 and up range and sometimes it makes you go hmmmm, why get a new cartridge when i can get a new printer for the same price then recycle the used one. Thou the starter cartridges has 50-75% toner levels and thats where companies make the money in selling you toner cartridges with cheap printers. Goodluck
