Status of Women

Mrs. Maria Mourani (Ahuntsic, Ind.):

Mr. Speaker, prostitution is a system of exploitation and a form of violence against women and children.

Does the government intend to propose a new legislative framework for prostitution by making it officially illegal and criminalizing the purchase of sexual services rather than prostitutes? Above all, will it also endorse the establishment of support programs for those people across the country?

Hon. Peter MacKay (Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, CPC):

Mr. Speaker, of course, it is absolutely essential that we respond to the Supreme Court's ruling on prostitution.

The member had many good ideas for addressing the issue, for example with programs. We do not need a bill to provide a comprehensive response to the Supreme Court ruling. Programs are also needed to help the most vulnerable people who are affected by this issue.

the dutch have legalization, which is what we had in canada....it sucks, we don't really want that framework....although dancing women in windows is pretty damn cool...and it would be cool to live in a red light district.....

that won't happen here in vancouver though...as part of the www.livingingincommunity.ca public consultations, people don't support red light districts here....

yes, jessica...this woman is a staunch abolitionist. she's full of the same rhetoric as the other wind bags...its hard to watch these people frame us all as victims without choice....

we should all email her and let her know what we think of her attitude about our lives....

Jessica,

The sad reality is that if she reads your e-mail she will think "that poor lady, she has no idea that she is an abused victim".

Her self righteous way of thinking is closed to the critical analysis of any thought pattern differing from her own.
I was going to email, pretty much what Jessica said. The reality is though, she will continue to be closed. People like that always are.

Your efforts would be better spent attempting to educate Justin Trudeau on the matter. I wish you luck in your endeavors... the conservatives are a lost cause whose core beliefs encourage the victimization of people.

I wrote a very nice email telling her that before I started charging I was an ethical slut and that I'm an empowered 3rd wave feminist, that I have never been victimized etc. That I love the freedom, the sex. the compliments. That there is a lot of good that working girls can do. Everybody needs loving touch. This is a very short version of what I wrote

Then I thought what if it does become completely illegal, I'm now on her radar. I try so hard to stay under the radar. lol. I got scared and didn't send. However, I did save it if I change my mind later lol. I also thought about making a fake email, but it would be better if there was a real working girl sending the email lol. I'm a chicken. I know :( Otherwise I'd be at all of Susi's things supporting her publicly.

Well, it is a valid concern... these people are campaigning to hurt you, even if they don't realize it. The harm that they inflict on others will never come home to roost for them, sadly.

For the record, I wouldn't want what Amsterdam has. I've been there and seen it in person... it's not a good scene. Women parading around like animals in a zoo, pimps hanging out on the corners, keeping an eye on things... drunken tourists and audacious mongers leering and jeering.

To make it worse, few if any of the girls looked sober... alcohol or drugs, I don't know. I swear to god a few of them looked too young to be there. Also, of all those there, how many were there as part of organized crime? It wasn't something I considered until many years later, btw.

I never partook in anything in Amsterdam, aside from some fries, some beer, and some artwork (and wonderment at the cities architecture). You have to keep your wits about you in the RLD, or else you'll be hit with a shake down or pick pocketed.

For all those reasons, I never want to see one here. There *are* better ways of doing things. The RLD was just one pillar in the approach to dealing with prostitution, but the other 3 pillars failed to be funded. Knowing our politicians leanings, the same thing would happen here. Education is needed for them...and I hope people like Susi are equal to the task, lord knows I'm not.
