Nice Wine from Chile

Try any of the exellent wines from Chile, several of which are available in 1.5 ltr sizes for less than $20. My own favorite is Cono Sur Merlot but there are several other good brands from Chile and other red varieties (e.g. Cabernet, Shiraz) in this price range.

Spanish wines: A closely guarded secret...

Their champagnes (oops... Sparkling wines) are to die for. Their growing climate is similar or superior to France's. They're very well priced (90% less than equivalents), follow the same apellation controls as their French cousins, and are also attractively packaged to boot. The Segura products have been rated above Dom offerings for years (92+)...

Silver Oak
Silver Oak is one of my favs. Been collecting it since the late 80s. What's it cost in Canada though?

2001 Alexander Valley release day is July 30! The wine is good, but I think it has slipped a little since Justin Meyer left. $60 US a bottle is too much for what you get in my opinion.

Agreed, great find! Their Pinot is nice as well.

If you like the merlot Cab blend, and fond of Aussies, try the McWilliams 2002 Cab-Merlot... at $12 or so it is an incredible bargain........

There is no standard for wines, buy what like to taste. Each region and country specializes in different tastes. Most people first starting out drinking wines will drink a white wine as they are generally sweeter and easier to drink. As for red wine beware of the tannic acid in the wine, it will give you a massive headache. If you are looking for a Canadian wine which is not a bad choice, pick a VQA (Vintners Quality Alliance) these are wines that are certified. As for my taste if I drink red I would pick a merlot style it is flavored with pepper, or an Australian white such as Tyrells Long Flat White Long Flat. If you are picking a wine to impress some one buy the most expensive, to show them how much money you have. If you are buying for enjoyment buy a variety. Most higher end wine sellers will have wine tasting nights go to one and find out what you like. White

Stags Leap

ATF: Stags Leap[/QUOTE]

Gina are you referring to Stags' Leap Winery or Stag's Leap Wine Celler??

If it is the Wine Celler I must agree with you. I have a case of '01 Fay, a case of '01 SLC and a half a case of 01 Cask 23.

By the way, Wine Spectator rates the 01 Napa Cabs the best ever. If it is not, it is only second to that memorial year 1976. That being the case, I bought a case of "Q"; a case of Robert Craig Mt. Veeder and Howell Mountain; and a case of BV's Georges de Latour.

Closer to home, Columbia Winery is turning out some great wines for under $35 USD. Their 99 Red Willow Syrah and Millenium (a blend of Cab, Syrah and Cab Frank) are outstanding. They are still available at the winery.

For every day reds, try Covey Run Syrah (89 points Spectator) or Snoqualamie Syrah (89 points Spectator). The rating is for the 02 vintage of both wines. Currently in the Seattle area, they both sell in the $7 range.

Plan on getting to Canada this fall to taste in the Okanogan(sp). Any suggestions would be appreciated. (Both wineries and SP's)

I use to put out a list of under $10 USD wines that drank much better than the price would indicate. If you are interested I will start posting it here.
