Nice watches

After living with an el cheapo watch for all of my life, I'm thinking about getting a really nice one, like a Tag Heuer, an Omega, Tiffany, Breitling, etc... basically the one I'll probably wear until I die :) However, after looking around a bit, it seems like most if not all of the really expensive watches are huge and they weigh a ton. I guess if you pay all that money for one, you're supposed to show it off.

Sooo... question for the guys...
1) if you have an uber-expensive watch, say over $3000, are you happy you spent all that money on it? Love it? Waste of money?
2) any recommendations for a watch that is nice but not super bulky and heavy?

And for any girls reading this...
Do you notice men with nice watches? Does it make a difference to you? <--- not that I want a nice watch to score with the girls, but that would be an awesome bonus :)

I notice nice watches... though if it has a character that is right for you, price mean nothing.

An inexpensive watch that suits the man can be very nice. I wear both, myself, depending on my mood. Sometimes a simple expensive watch is great, but sometimes I like the fun ones for some outfits.

I also think that sport watches are great for sports, but don't wear it all the time!

A very simple titanium Esquire is always nice, and prob only a grand.

Hi threepeat,

I wear a reasonably high-end, several-years-old Esquire (approx. $700) and it has always received compliments from members of both sexes. I suspect the compliments originate from the simple fact that the watch suits me and the rest of my attire, rather than being expensive for its own sake.

While not claiming to be an expert on women, I have observed that they notice several items on a man: watches, wedding rings, and shoes. What we guys notice tends to be more basic and a helluvalot more predictable! :) So buy the best (not necessarily the most expensive) watch you can afford and the one that best matches your personality and wardrobe. If you are not a sailing enthusiast or an amateur pilot, then wearing several of the Breitlings and Tag Hauers will just make you look like an ostentatious prick.

And yes, while many of the nicer watches are heavy they should not be so cumbersome as to overpower the average man's wrist. Just go to a jewellery store and start experimenting. Preferably, bring a woman whose tastes you trust - it does not have to be someone you are sleeping with, just someone with a discerning eye!

Happy shopping!

I had an Esquire watch and it was nice while it was new, but over time it didn't hold up to everyday wear and tear. Maybe others have had better luck with their Esquires, but I wouldn't recommend them.

I would recommend that while you're thinking of upgrading to a possibly bigger and bulkier watch that you go get yourself an inexpensive bigger and bulkier watch like a $60 Timex so that you can see for yourself if it's annoying or if you don't even notice it. No sense in paying for the expensive bigger watch if it's too bulky for you. Who knows you may even grow to love that Timex...

Just south of here
check out Movado watches.

They have some really nice models that are smaller in size than most, and look good on a smaller sized wrist. The one I have was about $800 or so. I am very happy with it, and get alot of compliments from the ladies.

And I agree with Vroomfondel...get one that fits your size, your style, and looks good on you...not just one that is expensive.

my favourite watch is a bulova wind up that I purchased from a cool watch shop in Lucerne. (hole in the wall place, really). I think it was one of the few hand wound ones left in the shop, as they really had to go searching for it.

You have to know what you want, what you really want, and go for the gusto. I wanted a classy, hand wound watch... not one of the automatic wound watches. There's got to be somethign that catches your eye, your attention, your imagination. If none of this is met, why bother buying the watch?

Something from Cartier will attract the ladies, what with all the diamonds and white gold.

A Rolex?

I like the Movado Museum (sp) style watches. Black face with no numbers just a metalic dot indicating 12. Classic, timeless and rather thin

my advice

Take the money that you'd otherwise spend on the watch and buy a return ticket to Thailand. Go to a night market when you get there, and buy one of their fakes of one of the brands you listed. The things keep perfect time and nobody can tell them from the real thing.
Of course, this advice only applies if you're trying to impress others. If you want to impress yourself, check out Jaeger LeCoultre. I recommend the Master Control line. It's my fav watch in my collection. The thing just oozes quality. This is the type of watch you can pass down to your kid.
What ever happened to that tradition?

I have a Breitling Navitimer that an X gave me for Christmas. It's a cool watch, don't get me wrong, but it's very heavy, and it's bulky. In my opinion, I'd never fork out the several thousand she paid for it. The watch I wear most of the time is a Luminox, you can beat the crap out of it, and it still works great. You might give that a shot, plus, it's only about 300 to 400 bucks.

End of the day, Breitlings are cool, but prob not worth the money. Also, a friend of mine has a Rolex submariner, and the same thing, big, bulky, heavy. Hope that helped.

If you can afford one, you should get a Rolex. I personally don't like the ones with gold and diamonds everywhere (unless you want to look like a gangsta), a steel Submariner is perfect. This watch will definitely last you a life time!

But, with about $1000 or so to spend, I would get a Tag Heuer ($1000+), or a Tissot ($700 to $1500). Or even a Seiko (around $500) is pretty good.

I have two, one is a Breitling and the other one that I blew a years bonus on is listed below. And yes, I do love them. One for work and the other for going out.

Thanks TR. I just looked at your watch though, and I think for that price I might go buy an Acura CSX instead

Beautiful.

Of course they are all fakes... I spent the saved $$$ on pooning and girls at the bar don't know any different.

Isn't that what it is all about?

I have a Rolex basic Oysterdate, lusted after them for a long time but after having it for a few years the novelty completely wore off. I just use my cellphone for the time now, while the watch has been on a shelf for years.
A friend has a TAG with a bunch of dials and the rotating bezel, none of which he ever uses, but it just looks gaudy and clunky to everyone else. But they do make nicer and sleeker watches. I gave a girl a nice gold one a couple of years ago and she liked it.:D

That Cartier sounds like real goer - is she a clock watcher.

Ive had Coleman for about 15 odd years now. Its been just about everywhere. Its a roughhousing watch, works well everywhere. But when in a suit, it Chronograph. Bought it the year Villeneuve won the Long Beach Grand Prix and tiestick was 10 bucks

Hey Threepeat, stick with your clunker. I've had a Seiko that has got to be over 20 years old. It's all scratched up but I've never spent a dime on it other than replacing the battery. I think it originally cost about $150. Recently I was looking at what Seiko offers today and one similar to mine is about $250. Just think what you can do with all the $$$$$$$$$$$$ you save.
Can you tell I'm not a jewelry person? I love to buy for the ladies but I can't stand to wear anything myself. I wear a watch out of necessity.
