I mean I don't mind watching a physical game. But, a super violent physical game?! Give me a break! The management can produce lots of dirty players like that! And then, you are not watching a skillful and strategic game. You are watching a pure physical game! Should use IIHF rules on physicality! Those games in Olympics are way better, excited than the NHL in the competition level!

Hockey has always been a violent game and there will always be plays that are dirty in nature. The NHL is run by a total idiot and that is part of the problem. If they want to minimize injuries simply REMOVE head shots.....you hit a guy in the head there are consequences. Not if it's from the side or this and that. Players will adjust just like in the NFL. Guys will argue this point and that is part of the problem. Just remove it period.

Remove the instigator rule or remove fighting. I personally like fighting but there are too many guys in the league who hide behind the instigator rule and it ruins the game. That's as simple as simple can be.

It's not soccer, people. Jeebus. Man up or shut up. I agree head shots should be penalized more severely, but it is a ridiculously fast game and sometimes shit happens. Can't stand the heat? Go play curling.

These guys are skating around on a small rink and going quite fast. Speed + weight = the appearance of violence. It's been this way for years, the problem these days is the recklessness of a few, not the majority. It always goes in cycles (ie...check out the Broadstreet Bullies, etc).

I appreciate the IIHF game as well, but you'll never see that here due to the requirement for larger ice meaning that more seats would have to disappear.

Keep it as is and punish the reckless. A clean hit is part of the game, a dirty hit has no place in the game.

My brother-in-law as a hockey player in the ECHL...now if you want to see dirty, there's a league for you ;)

Ignorant comment.

The size of players, quality of equipment, fitness levels and speed are all beyond what the game and rules were designed for. The size of the rink, for a start, should be enlarged to int levels.

Yes, in a fast, physical game there are going to be inevitable collisions, and head-hunting morons are probably always going to find a way to stay in the league, but every other sport adapts to new realities and does quite well. The rules can still allow physicality without the stupidity, and that starts at the top, like any other business.

What kind of reaction would we have seen if Crosby's leg had been broken a few days ago?

The same reaction we saw when Pavel Bure's knee was taken out? ;) (ie..we all hated Chelios a little more than usual)

Seriously, though, watching last nights game...that was very entertaining for me. Nothing dirty, no major hits, but some nice solid hits by Hordichuk early on that rattled the boards nicely.

Actually, I was wondering if the NHL has any rule on hitting a guy after his helmet comes off. The second hit by Hordichuk into the boards had the potential do concuss since the Shark player's helmet had come off in the first hit.

Missed that one. Didn't have the greatest seats in the house for this one. I am going to say that they should have a rule against hitting a helmetless player...and, they should put the IIHF rule in where if your helmet pops off you have to go directly to the bench (maybe then, these guys will strap their helmets on correctly).

That would be strange....you cant hit a helmetless player?
His helmet came off, most likely cause he didn't have it strapped down tight.
If a guy is still playing after his helmet comes off, I say fair game.
Lots of guys will finish their shift with no helmet.

Bigger ice???? If the owners/gms wont do shit now to help prevent injuries, like changing simple rules.
I can't see all 30 modifying their buildings and reducing seating capacity

Fast game, I'm ok with it. But non-stop even though you know you're gonna hit that guy hard, I'm calling it a homicide! Remember Bertuzzi's case? What did NHL do? Nothing! What did the court of law do? Gave him a fucking trial! In the Olympics, almost every single game is fast. But, did they non-stop? No! And still, brought up the competitive level that IOC wanted! So, people, if you want NHL to be like this, I can guarantee your career in NHL is only one game!

NFL is different.

The game is great the way it is. Take hitting out and you have some lame derivative of hockey. Some guys are getting hurt well that's the game. There have always been injuries due to hits throughout the history of the game. It is not getting worse, it just seems that way because the media is sensationalizing every questionable hit. Every game is on TV now so you are getting a few isolated incidents thrown onto an endless highlight reel and it looks like the game is extremely violent. 99.9% of NHL games are played without cheap shots and head injuries. Chill out or watch basketball people.

You can't play regular NHL games like the Olympics. Every great Hocky player in the world was packed onto 10 teams at the Olympics. It wasn't the IIHF rules that made the games great. It was the overwhelming concentration of talent into a few teams for a short tournament where every game was a "back to the wall" game. Taking hitting out of the NHL will not replicate that experience.

So is football, wrestling, judo and boxing. Would you like us to take body contact out of that too ????????

Maybe we should substitute bone crushing hits for "hey mister is it ok if i now can have my turn with the puck ?" pffft!

If you think hockey is too violent maybe you should watch ice skating, just close your eyes when they fall!

Exactly Rooster. You had skilled guys, top to bottom with few exceptions. in the Olympics The NHL has too many teams with marginal players, who are easliy replaceable at their low skill level. The only way they can stop someone from taking their jobs is by neutralizing the skill players from the opposing team.

Yeah, I just don't agree with these old dinosaur arguments that making head shots illegal is suddenly turning it into a pussy sport. You're not taking away the hitting, just the dangerous ones.

Example: Take the game of rugby. For those not familiar with it, it's like football except without the pads. It's a full contact sport and I once had a professor describe it as "fighting on a grass field"; you can easily find highlights on youtube. What most people who don't play the sport know is that there actually a lot rules restricting what you can or can't do in the tackle:

-You can't do a shoulder charge like in football, you have to make an attempt to wrap the ball carrier with your arms when you're making the tackle. This removes the pointy part of the shoulder from the collision and makes for a less severe hit.
-You can't touch a ball carrier if he's in the air.
-If you lift a guy in the tackle, you can't "dump tackle" him ie dump him upside down onto the ground.
-And, of course, nothing above the neck.

Now, despite these restrictions, I would defy anybody to watch a rugby match and convince me that they've turned it into a "pansy" sport or "taken the hitting out of the game". They haven't removed the hits, just the dangerous ones. They've done the same thing in the NFL and they can do likewise in the NHL if they had people with actual balls and brains running it instead of the yokels they got now.

I don't think IIHF doesn't allow you to be physical for the games.
I mean body hits are ok. But, dangerous ones?! You must be kidding me!
Lots of dangerous body hits nowadays in the NHL. They do nothing!

Hey Mercyshooter. Mayber you missed this one
Head shots happen in the Olympics too.

My point is that in any body contact sport there is going to be a degree of belligerance to gain the physical edge. Nobody wants to see a head shot and it should be penalized but you don't have to change an entire sport just because the media is sensationalizing incidents to sell papers. Thousand of games are played without head shots. Only a couple have this problem.

Rooster, I watched that Slovakia VS. Norway game. That guy who did the hit immediately out of the game! So, the rule has zero tolerance on that. But in NHL, he won't be out of the game! And this is my point! Play clean, not dirty! NHL has lots of loopholes to create dirty players.
