NHL draft of 2003 still haunts Canadiens

There have always been questions raised with the Canucks drafting record but the Habs record at the draft has been no better if not worse. For example, taking Andrei Kostitsyn in the 1st round of the 2003 draft when they could have had any of the following instead:

Dustin Brown
Jeff Carter
Mike Richards
Zach Parise
Brent Seabrook
Ryan Getzlaf
Ryan Kesler
Brent Burns
Corey Perry

Ouch... to make things worse the following were taken in the 2nd round:

Loui Eriksson
Patrice Bergeron
Shea Weber
David Backes

Hopefully they don't screw up their number 3 pick this year but then again with Russians in the mix (Yakupov, Grigorenko and Galchenyuk), this could be a write off as well unless they luck out and whoever they take turns into a Malkin or Datsyuk and not a Zherdev or Filatov.

Are you a Habs fan or just trying to be cute? After drafting Doug Wickenheiser, nothing haunts any more. Besides, Andrei Kostitsyn was ranked much higher than 10th but teams were scared off by his illness - epilepsy. The Habs took a gamble and lost, end of story. Wilde... I am truly a Habs fan. I watched them as a kid. I was devastated when they lost to the Oilers in 1981. And I could never ever understand why they traded Rod Langway, Brian Englom, Craig Laughlin and Doug Jarvis for Ryan Walter and Rick Green. I really believe that deal set them back 5 years or more.

Another trade that killed me was the Chris Chelios/Denis Savard deal. I always thought Montreal should have pursued Dale Hawerchuck instead. Oh the farm system during that time was so disappointing as well! Guys like Tom Chorske, Jose Charboneau, Mark Pederson, David Maley, Gilles Thibodeau, Stefan Lebeau, Scott Sandelin, Andre 'Red Light' Racicot', etc.

But seriously I do like the Habs. I mean I did pay $200 last year to see the Panthers with Budaj in net at the Bell Centre with the Habs losing 2-1 (I think).

Anyway, I just wish the Habs could draft a little better.

Agreed.....the 2nd round and 5th round picks might pan out. Look at the Boston Bruins they're still living off of the Cam Neely plus 1st round pick/Barry Pederson deal i.e., the assets that were have been moved around and acquired from that deal. I think Milan Lucic is a result of the many deals that have resulted from that trade. Fingers crossed.

Truer words have never been spoken. I keep all my Hockey News Draft Issues and it is fun to look back a few years later and second guess. Take the 2005 draft, Pittsburgh took Sidney Crosby first overall and years later that was the right pick. TSN discussed the same draft last week and re-seeded according to how the players turned out. They had Carey Price listed at #2 ahead of 3 other players selected ahead of him. Same draft seen Vancouver pass on Marc Staal and Anze Kopitar and select Luc Bourdoin. Unfortunatley Bourdoin passed away but i doubt he would have produced the way Kopitar and Staal have. James Neal and Paul Stastney were selected in the 2nd round and Kris Letang and Jonathon Quick were selected in the 3 rd round.

You could make the argument about any of the 30 NHL teams not just Montreal. I guess if you want to single out one team that can easily be done but it is highly inaccurate and doesn't give the full picture.

I think Scott Gomez has always been a guy with great talent but a lack of work ethic/accountability and was able to cash in BIG TIME come contract time. In essence, he is a prime example of why contracts should NOT be guaranteed in the NHL.

He was a pretty good player when he played for New Jersey. But he really didn't do much in New York. And I'm sure the Rangers were surprised that they were able to unload that huge contract in a trade with the Canadiens. I really don't know what Bob Gainey was thinking when he did that. As Gomez has pretty much been a huge bust in Montreal. Now they are going to have to buy him out or send him to the minors. It kind of reminds me of the Blue Jays and Vernon Wells. I can't believe the Angels took on that contract. And Wells has been pretty much a bust for L.A. And I think he's making close to 20 million per year. The baseball contracts are just insane compared to the ones in hockey.

To add insult to injury, Gainey had to include Ryan McDonagh (averaging around 26-27 mins of ice time in these playoffs) as part of that deal. That trade has to be on the list of the worst 5 trades in the NHL's history.

You could probably throw in the Cam Neely and Markus Naslund trades as some of the worst trades off all-time as well. Both involving the Vancouver Canucks. One good and one bad.
