As someone new to the forums I've been disheartened reading over reviews. We all know the sex industry should be legalized, but in the absence of government support I somehow expected more community cohesion in a place like Victoria. People in and around the industry supporting each other and setting standards. All participants adhering to an unwritten of code of conduct about how to behave - to keep law enforcement at bay, gain some tacit support from the public, keep people safe and healthy, and support those who provide a vital service in a society that doesn't appreciate them.

What I'm seeing is more like the wild west. The forums feel like a pack of wolves on the prowl looking for fresh meat. There are some considerate and kind folks out there but the group mentality on here is often toxic, and there are people who are emboldened by it. There seem to be very few providers active on these forums. Why is that?

I'm also disturbed at how little regard there is for STIs/STDs. So many people looking for an unsafe encounter, including from those that don't advertise such, and then gladly reporting on their experience.

An "industry" that is all about the most intimate forms of human interaction needs to care more about one another. It's possible in a city this size. These forums seem like to a good place to start.

All valid thoughts, I think.

One important distinction to highlight right away: “decriminalization” is what SW’s seek, almost unites on that. Not legalization. Plenty of good material online as to why, won’t waste space rehashing what others can say better.

There are also local orgs who support SW. just google “sex work support Victoria” and you’ll see a great one.

I’d agree on many of your observations. I took a long pause from this board, pretty sickened and annoyed at how things were. Spent a lot of time on Twitter, following SW’s. I’d say a good % absolutely HATEthese forums. With a passion. There are definitely some who stay on and interact, but I saw way more posts slaying “slobbyiests” and mocking everyone who goes onto these boards.

why did I return? Well, I did notice some more proaction by mods to clean up some of the behaviour. And less explicit support for the more vulgar posts, whereas more reviews are, I’d say, less explicit and more respectful, something I’ve changed towards as I’ve gotten older.I don’t post much and don’t see many women to review anyway, but if I’m going to review more, may as well lead by example as best I can (small controbutionas it may be).

To your last point: another thing I grew to learn from Twitter: SW’s and those who see them are as wildly diverse as any slice of society (they’re/we’re truly from ALL avenues of society!) and expecting us all to unite in anything (except maybe decrim) is highly unlikely. It’s a nice thought but I think it’s as realistic as world peace, I fear.

Well written posts by both of you. I applaud you for standing up and saying something. I support the conversation. I don't know what PERB is like in Vancouver, but I have enjoyed another online community in the past in a previous city where it was very active by both men and women and was organized for the greater good. We can get there here with patience and active positive participation.

I have to agree. Positive participation is key with a little dash of teasing humour!!
