Has anybody heard anything about these aircars? Apparently, they run on compressed air. They claim that you could simply fill them up off of the air hose at the gas station or plug it in an electrical socket at home. On a full tank, you get somewhere around 300 km in range. Seems awfully affordable. They claim that the cars last longer as well because the engines contain less moving components and there's no heat damage (non-combustable engine).

It looks dinky:

But if you can get a commuter car that can run on a few dollars worth of air per week... I can't really figure out how the engine works, though.

What do you guys think? Bullshit? With all this talk on the Kyoto Accord and our failure to live up to it's goals, it seems like an option.

yes, they do actually work ... not much speed, won't accellerate like a v-8, and 300 kms is not as far as it sounds ... but the principle is the the compressed air runs a little turbine that produces electricity that runs an electric motor or plug it in and charge the battery which runs a compressor that fills the air tank again.

it tries to get away from all the batteries that fully electric cars carry but the air tank is heavy too so its not a great saving.

not a bad starting concept though.

Seems legit to me. There's a pile of reliable source info on the net about the car. The website also has relatively detailed info on the mechanics. The straight air car is made for city traffic, but there is also a dual air/gas model for higher speeds. I've also seen a manufacturer in Europe that's making steam powered cars. :)
