South Africa's president, Jacob Zuma, has announced that Nelson Mandela has died. He was 95.

Probably the most influential politician in the world who made real change to his country passed away today.

Sad to hear when such a historical figure is no longer with us.
I bet you hear fewer tributes for him than some drugged out Hollywood actor or musician.

My two discontinued cents anyway.

He did a lot to unify a country that had a long history or Apartheid and bring people together. He also was a great ambassador who was able to get foreign nations to invest in S A at a time when it was not the safest place to send your money.

What I never realized until I watched Invictus was the Black South Africans prisoners would cheer for the opposition versus the Springboks just to enrage the guards while Mandela was captive on Robben Island. 1995 World Cup Rugby Championship in South Africa was a turning point with all races eventually cheering for their Springboks.

Glad he has peace. From what I read, the last few months must have been tough on him and his family

I truly learn to respect because he brought change in Africa without calling for violence.
South Africa ,is not all of Africa .. buy they were able to showed one thing that other countries a turn for the part I did not show. and that was forgiveness for what was done to him.And he caused leaders to have a change of oppion on ture away from there fear and prejudices.
Yes there still was a Exodus from many people were afraid.. did not leave it with you racist.
But South Africa still there better than most countries.. dismantle apartheid

On a side note
Some that I do South Africa. they actually had heard and Ella died over 3-4 months ago.And that it was kept quiet because of the economic and political situation in South Africa

remember even President Obama did not drop by to see Mandela.. which I thought was strange what I thought was strange no matter what y excuse they gave

Some B rated or worse actor dies in a car crash and there over 20 posts with 980 views on Perb.

A 95 year old world leader who made real change in Africa, spent nearly half his life in jail because he believed in his cause and finally overcame all adversity to defeat apartheid passes away.

The Mandela thread has only 16 posts with 238 views.

Wow, we should name this the TMZ Lounge.

In Your Wildest Dreams!
I wanted to wait until later on when I'd had some time to reflect on what it meant to me that Mandela had died.

I was raised by a very socially conscious mother, and it's only now that I begin to realise why she is the way she is and was the way she was. I didn't know she grew up poor, and that her parents and older brother picked strawberries in the Fraser Valley as day workers when she was a child, and she was left to look after her 7 year old sister. Mom was 12. Our house boycotted South African wines, California grapes...I was a really voracious and precocious reader/devourer of information about the world as a kid. When my mother informed a waiter that no, thank you, they would NOT like one of the special bottles of genuine Johannesburg Riesling that the restaurant had acquired, I needed to know why. My mother told me about apartheid, and about Nelson Mandela. It made me cry, because I was THAT kid.

I remember when the Sun City concerts were attracting such controversy in the 80s, and I remember the boycott song that was recorded, too, by artists who "ain't gonna play Sun City!" I don't remember where I was, but I remember the fierce joy I felt in hearing the news that he was walking away from Robben Island a free man, who preached reconciliation and peaceful, EQUAL coexistence after 27 years of oppression and imprisonment. I reflected today while I was talking to the woman next to me at the pedicure barn. (Because yes, I'm that woman; I talk to strangers. On buses, in bank lineups, at the grocery store...) There are generational defining moments, I know..

Where were you when you heard the war (whichever one it was that impacted YOUR life somehow) was over?
Where were you when you heard that JFK/MLK/Bobby Kennedy/Ronald Reagan/John Lennon had been shot?
Where were you when the Berlin Wall came down?
Where were you when the Twin Towers came down?
Where were you when you heard Pope John Paul II had died?
And now...where were you when you heard that Nelson Mandela had died?

YES you did and I was adding the exclamation point. Thank you

I have a number of friends who emigrated from South Africa. Some are bitter about having their farms etc basically confiscated but still acknowledge it was something that was long overdue in SA. Even though Jo Berg is still one of the most dangerous cities in the world for a Caucasian to wander about; all of these friends of mine still go "home" to see family and friends. They all talk warmly about Nelson Mandela even though they grew up on "the other side".

I am a fan of the South African band(caucasian) DIE ANTWOORD. On their Facebook page, they did a good tribute to Nelson Mandela. He was very well loved.

This music was in the heart of many in SA when they were transitioning to an equal society.

Check out Searching for Sugarman. Much of his music was censored by the SA Police so it could not be listened to by the public.
