Just need some comments or legal advice regarding the following:
I sold my car a couple weeks ago privately. I told the buyer what was wrong with the car, what needed fixing, what was done to it recently, etc. Buyer took the vehicle to a mechanic of his choice to get it mechanically inspected. He got the results and bought the vehicle. Did the transfer of vehicle papers, etc.
Today, he has his friend call me up to say that when they were taking apart the engine component, don't ask me why, they said that they found a broken rod in there probably from when the timing belt was changed previously. I told them I had the belt changed at a licensed mechanic shop and was never aware of the damaged rod. I changed the belt probably in 2003 and haven't had any mechanics mention anything about a damaged rod. I'm not a mechanic myself and never suspected anything wrong. The car passed aircare. The car ran fine, even did 2 long trips to Edmonton and numerous trips down to the states.
So now, the buyers friend wants me to pay for part of the repairs to the rod. I told him that I sold the vehicle to him on Good faith and was never aware of the damage to the rod. I told him that he had the vehicle mechanically inspected by a mechanic of his choice. I told him that he bought the vehicle "as is".
Am I not right? that once we shake hands and finalize the deal then i have no financial responsibilities with that vehicle anymore? Can he sue me over damages that I honestly did not know about?
