I just noticed something. Lately, I have been seeing cops who are way out of shape. I don’t mean just a few pounds. I mean overweight to the point where a foot chase would be next to impossible. Not just in Calgary, but all over the place. Isn’t there some standard or fitness requirement for cops? Like if you get too out of shape you take a desk job? These are cops cruising around in cars who may at any moment, need to jump out and chase down a criminal. More and more, I’m seeing out of shape cops. I have seen a few officers who broke a sweat just walking briskly.
If a person works in a fitness center, odds are they have to be fit. If a person works as a hair dresser, they usually have to have some style or at least comb their hair. Apparently, once you become a cop, your set. Wouldn’t it be nice to know that if needed, the officer could catch the criminal who just mugged you or assaulted you? Maybe some officers get their seniority and feel they are secure. Maybe they feel they can slack off. I don’t know. Maybe law enforcement agencies should do the same thing as they do with drivers licenses for the elderly. Every 5 years, retest. If you don’t meet the standards, your given time to work on reaching those standards. If you can’t meet the standards, push paper, work for bylaw, or work at McDonalds. I hear Wal-Mart is always hiring. You barely have to flinch to be a door greater. Calgary Police Service is forever advertising that they are hiring. Why? Get rid of those who can’t perform or don’t meet the standard. Almost every career involves a yearly or bi-yearly performance evaluation. How low has law enforcement set their standards? Maybe if we replaced those who don’t meet the standard, with those who can, they wouldn’t need to have a forever hiring campaign.
