wow your dog only bit two people a family friend and a police officer that is very responsible pet ownership . had that happened today you would be criminally charged and your dog euthanised . my dog has NEVER bitten either man or beast ,tells me something if you cant seem to grasp it . is that why you deem yourself to be an expert on why police use shepherds ?because you see my employer (I have a real job , yes) bcan be found here http://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=j...JCtUwby9xNgH4bmsQ&sig2=LSJ_N5RCkR-GatQOaRoNmg
oh surprise whats this ....oh its the sport that is the training ground for police dogs my employer breeds and trains police dogs darlin so y dont you take a minute and heed the words of this inspirational song it seems as though it was written with you in mindhttp://youtu.be/PfmB-8onoMo
Actually the police force favors shepherds because they're versatile and easy to train. They pick up and retain training much easier than many other breeds. They have a wonderful, stable temperment and are very focused under pressure. They suit a variety of needs: they can be used as attack dogs, search and rescue dogs or therapy dogs. When I was 13 I was using my 2yr old German Shepherd as a therapy dog at a local retirement home. (this was after we had completed a year of training with a master trainer, I was a very skilled handler at that point) She bit someone twice in her life, both were justified in their own way. The first time she was like 9 months old, and sleeping outside on a warm summer night when a family friend was walking up to our house and didn't see her in the dark. He tripped over her and surprised her out of her sleep, she grabbed his ankle but released right away when she realized what happened (she never even left a dent in his skin from her teeth). The second time was when a cop was trying to talk to my sister and grabbed her arm and tried to lead her to his car and my sister started yelling. My dog saw this as a threat to my sister so she jumped up and bit the cops arm. The police understood what she was doing and weren't upset.
I like that you omitted the part about how they were raised with myself and my handicapped sister when we were kids, and you threw in the part about how these dogs (through their great cognitive ability) choose to attack small kids most of the time.

The owners are the problem, the owners who act dumbfounded are owners who shouldn't have dogs.

I realize you are going to argue your points ad nauseum and come up interesting doggy facts which I don't give a shit about. I'm sure for every dog bite on record you will find a justification which totally absolves the dog. Don't care. Bottom line. Dogs bite people. Pitt bulls, rottweilers, shepherds, dobermans. Sick of hearing about them.
kudos and amen

no dogs were bred to be pets they were workers ...and in some countries livestock intended to be served up on a platter
Yes.I know Rottweilers, Dobermans, Shepherds are all large, vicious, dangerous dogs. They were bred to be that. No accident that most armies and police forces favor shepherds as their tool with teeth. I know owners crow on and on about it being the owner not the dog being the problem, but as the previous poster suggested in his great post about pet crocodiles, it's the owners who always act dumfounded and outraged when their killer dog does what it is bred to do and gets out of it's enclosure and attacks the unsuspecting public.More often than not, small children.
Same argument as guns don't kill people, people kill people.
Owners of large attack dogs take some pride in having the most dangerous dog on the block, but take no responsibility when their dog goes on the rampage. Yes the owners are 50% of the problem because they are irresponsible idiots. The dogs are 50% of the problem because they really weren't bred to be domestic pets.

Miss Melody, are suggesting something as ludicrous as actually seeking the advice of a recognized professional to help with a somewhat serious problem? My God! You have some nerve!

If your employer breeds and trains police dogs then why don't you ask them for a recommendation on a vet?

I would not want to misinterpret your dog handling skills there for Miss Melody deserves no criticism, the circumstances and out come tell me 1st attack was non malicious and 2nd "put your hands on my gf" and see what happens?! She is also right and you don't need to be an expert to know what she stated is correct..
No dog is incapable of biting "mine or yours" regardless of how sweet and caring they are!
I do agree w/ miss melody that your employer should have special "in's" to get you help w/ your dog!

My friend with pets in White Rock says there's a vet on 152nd Street just a bit north of 24th Ave.
Address and phone 2460 152 Street, South Surrey, BC V4P 1M8 (604) 536-7618
Since you do not drive, maybe you can walk there with your dog, if he's able to.
Perhaps you have a friend who might lend you some cash?

You could call this vet and explain your situation.

so eloquently put and so ladylike no one asked you to be here and no one asked you to stay! i hear a naval ship just docked maybe they can teach you to submit in exchange for vocabulary lessons
You can't be serious.

Call a damn vet, go on yelp and find a well reviewed vet in your area. It's not fucking rocket science.

For the record I don't think you should have a dog, your lack of comprehension of basic things (like the fact that a vet who caters to the the 'show dog' crowd wouldn't know the first thing about your dog, a pet) is fucking astounding.

Good luck!
What he said...

And, actually, there's a tremendous amount of sympathy for animals in the Perb community. I think what happened in this thread is that animal lovers get extremely upset when an animal receives an injury from an act of (real or assumed) neglect. In this case, perhaps the individual in the house, who took it upon themselves to let the dogs out alone, which was clearly a neglectful act, given the circumstances.

I assert that the hostility in this thread wasn't in regards to any particular breed, or even necessarily towards the owner of the dog, but rather to the senseless suffering that this poor animal now has to endure, due to human carelessness and disregard for the safety needs of the animals in question. Whether a child or a dog, the symptoms sound like the effects of a serious internal infection.

It's terribly frustrating when you place your faith and funds in the hands of a 'professional', only to be told that there's nothing they can do...meanwhile your money has changed hands. How many pet owners here have had similar situations...many I'm sure.

In spite of the tangent that this thread went on, I feel very sorry for the suffering pet, and I hope that a solution presents itself soon, to end his suffering, and help him get back on a path to good health...

Like war, religion, politics, oil, and large breed dogs people are firmly in bedded in their thoughts and beliefs and open discussion threads will always have people on their fence!

Get along and respect each other

were both dogs leashed when out walking?
Were both dogs muzzled as well?

If you own one, you need to protect other dogs and people by leashing and muzzling these things.

I wish I had a dollar for every "my precious pit bull wouldn't hurt a fly, he was provoked and that's why the baby lost an eye".

They are banned in Ontario, and if out they must be muzzled and leashed or the dog will be confiscated. It's like seatbelt and helmet laws, you have to have laws because people can't figure this out on their own.

I would never hurt anyone consciously, or an animal for that matter. The only thing is, if I see an attractive girl offering me sex, I might not be able to help myself. It might be cheating, and thus it would be wrong and I know it... and loved ones would be hurt. People say men are dogs, and it's rather true. I know it's wrong but I just have to. Can't help it. The instinct is too strong.

If you can't take the animal out of man, can you then take an animal out of animal?
So what you're saying then is you have all the qualities of a dog - except loyalty!

And that's a wrap. This thread has gone on far to long. I am going to close it now before I have to start banning people.
