If you live in or near Edmonton, you would've heard about a missing couple from St. Albert from July 2010. They were leaving St. Albert going to BC but never made it. They were driving a motorhome towing a Hyundai Tucson SUV. The couples burnt out motorhome was recovered a few days later in July 2010 and a few days after that their Tucson was found. Their bodies have never been found.

Now the police are looking for the welder who attached a tow bar to the Tucson so they could tow it behind their motorhome. As a average joe citizen, I can't figure out what significance a tow bar would have in solving the murder mystery.

Anybody have any clues as to how a tow bar would help in this murder mystery?

I was trying to come up with something too. Perhaps the tow bar was something that was visibly done after they disappeared. If so, then if it was done by a shop, they might be able to identify who they did it for?

?????? They had the tow bar welded on before going on the trip so they could tow the Hyundai, so..............?????

Also they are looking for the welder that did the work, not the tow bar itself, at least according to the OP, so maybe the welder has become a "person of interest."

The tow bar was welded on 6 years ago, so not sure why they would want to talk to the welder.

Exactly.....and in that kind of business, alot of the welders will move around. Maybe the guy was from the east and came to Alberta for work and has gone back home...or maybe he's work outside of Alberta. (who knows?).

If the tow bar was installed in 2006 (when they purchased the Tucson)...and they went missing in July 2010...I don't see the connection.

We've all watched enough CSI in our day. I don't think Horatio would go looking for the welder in such a case, would he???

Looked at some of the online articles and the pictures of the vehicle show a tow hook up at the front of the vehicle. From the looks of it the tow bar itself would be a a frame setup with two pins attaching it to the front of the Tuscany. Since the hookup had to be modified did the bar have to be modified as well ? Has a tow bar been found in the possession of somebody and now the police have to find the welder in hopes of making a positive ID of the bar as belonging to the McCanns ?

Interesting....I guess I never thought that somebody would steal the tow bar for their own use.

Hopefully this is the clue that they are looking for that will help solve this for the family.

Exactly what I was thinking as I read through this thread. They must've found a tow bar and are hoping to positively identify it.

Or one of their persons of interest has a physical connection to a tow bar that fits the tow bar mounts on the Tucson. From this interest in the item, I assume the McCanns' tow bar was not found with their vehicle, which they had been towing on their trip.

Because the missing couples' tow bar is a recycle job (it had been installed on a different vehicle by the McCanns before they bought the Tucson), it is believed that it had to be modified to fit their newer vehicle. So, find the welder who did the work. Have him look at the tow bar they have in hand to see if that welder can confirm that he worked on the tow bar the police now have. If so you have the first (that we know of) solid piece of physical evidence to connect someone with the McCann's Tucson at about the time they went missing.
I think that you are dead-on right with this. It was my first thought also.

Beverly Hills. In the Kitchen eatin' vittles.
Or maybe they have nothing but are under pressure from the family's lawyers. Being the group of Keystone Cops the RCMP has evolved into, this is a feeble attempt to make it look like they have a lead in a case that really they have no idea about.
