MRSN:Mav's Rockstar - Supernova Thread

I thought that Magni had just put on a great performance with two very upbeat high energy songs and Dave said it was a great way to end the show so I thought Tommy's comments were questionable. When Tommy came on and said that he didn't find Magni's original song memorable (like Dilana's was?) he might as well have just sent Magni packing right there. Not only will Tommy's comments influence voting against Magni, but he basically said that even if you finish first in voting "You're just not right for INX...err... Supernova" :) . At least that's how I interpreted Tommy's comments. Based on the look on Magni's face I think he interpreted it that way as well. :(

Supernova must change name: judge
Wed Sep 13, 12:13 PM ET

By Jonathan Cohen

NEW YORK (Billboard) - A California judge has ordered producers of the CBS reality show "Rock Star" to find a new name for its group Supernova, ruling that an established band already exists with that moniker.

The original Supernova, best known for contributing the song "Chewbacca" to the cult movie "Clerks," had previously filed for a preliminary injunction protecting its name.

The news comes at a particularly bad time for the TV show, which will name its winning vocalist Wednesday. The winner will promptly hit the studio with guitarist Gilby Clarke, bassist Jason Newsted and drummer Tommy Lee; the group is slated to begin a North American tour on New Year's Eve in Las Vegas.

As part of the judge's ruling, the CBS-spawned group is enjoined from using the Supernova name for performances and recordings.

"The ruling is a major victory for Supernova, especially since it has been announced on several occasions that our client's case had no merit," says Supernova attorney John Mizhir, Jr. "This is sweet justice. The order also proves that the law does not discriminate. The band members have worked hard for the past 17 years to establish the name Supernova and they are entitled to continue to perform without any other parties -- large or small -- infringing on their rights."

Costa Mesa, Calif.-based Supernova, founded in 1989 by Jodey Lawrence, Art Mitchell and David Collins, has released four albums.

I'd heard rumblings about that but I thought that Tommy and crew would have just paid the original Supernova guys off to use the name. It probably won't matter a whole lot cause based on the Supernova... err whatever you want to call them... based on the original music they've played so far they're probably not going to last too long anyways. The irony is that I can paraphrase Tommy from last night... their music just isn't that memorable. I don't remember their songs at all.

If Dilana wins, they can just change it to Supersoul (sound kinf of weird for a rock band).

There is rambling that it might be duo winners. I sure hope not.

After last night's show, I think Magni will be the first to go (unless he is not in the bottom 2). I want Toby to win but think Lukas will win. Storm and Ryan picked him to win as well in their exit interviews.

Good call picking Lukas. He was the best all-around: singing, stage presense/showmanship & writing. Toby would also have been a good pick. I wasn't sure if Lukas would win because all the songs he chooses to sing seem to be quit different from the original Supernova tracks, which by the way are horrible. Maybe Lukas' writing will help them!! Actually, a lot of the original songs from the contestants were better than the Supernova originals.

Atta boy Lukas! Another win for Canada.

A final post to cap off another season. I have been dissing the new tracks that we've heard by the "insert name here" band all summer. But last night with our Canadian boy singing them, they became easier to stomach. And I heard about 50% of the lyrics this time around. The best comment of the night was that Lukas and Dilana looked like they were about to perform at a goth wedding. Wonder if there will be a season 3 with the mediocre ratings in the US?

I think there will be a season three. With a new band hope springs eternal for better ratings. The question is who the band will be? I think they were on the right format with taking an existing band (INXS) without a lead singer instead of creating a new band out of famous musicians.

My prediction for next year:

Rockstar - Van Halen.

For me it was either Toby or Lukas. Dilana would have been a problem and I believe the band saw that. They said they picked the person with the most votes but the option was there for them to veto that which I like.

No mention of course that Canadians are 2 for 2 in Rockstar shows! Would anything have been said about Aussies or 'Mericans?

Maybe the next time it will be an all girl group looking for a lead singer. Bangles?? Will they have guys trying out for that? Excuse me, have you got an extra tampon?

By Jonathan Cohen

NEW YORK (Billboard) - The band at the heart of the recently concluded CBS reality series "Rock Star: Supernova" has a new name, following the resolution of a trademark dispute with a pre-existing group that had used the Supernova moniker.

As part of the settlement, the TV band will now be called Rock Star Supernova. The group consists of drummer Tommy Lee, bassist Jason Newsted and guitarist Gilby Clarke, as well as vocalist Lukas Rossi, who won that position on last week's season finale of the show.

The original Supernova, based in Orange County, Calif., has released four albums and is best known for contributing the song "Chewbacca" to the cult movie "Clerks."

The group sued Mark Burnett Productions, Lee, his bandmates and others in June for trademark infringement and other claims. After a September 12 court proceeding, the federal District Court in San Diego ordered Mark Burnett Productions, Rockstar Entertainment and Burnett-affiliated JMBP Inc. to stop using the name "Supernova" in connection with performing, recording or selling music.

As for Rock Star Supernova, the band is already in the studio working on its debut album, due November 21 via Epic. Its first tour kicks off December 31 in Las Vegas.
