Movie Theatre Gets Even With Texter

A movie theatre in Texas says they have a simple rule - don't use a cell phone during a movie.

When one woman recently violated this rule at the Alamo Drafthouse she was kicked out after two warnings, but obviously didn't feel the punishment was fair. So she decided to leave the theatre an irate phone message, however it is the Alamo that is getting the last laugh.

(Warning: Explicit words audio may be considered not safe for work.)

"We adopted our strict no talking policy back in 1997," writes Alamo founder Tim League on his blog about the incident. "Follow our rules, or get the hell out and don't come back until you can."

Advanced Etiquette lists turning off the phone as the top rule for going to see a movie. "Theatre managers post signs and present cute on-screen reminders," reads the Advanced Etiquette website. "Everyone just needs to get in the habit."

The woman first says she was using her phone as a flashlight to find her seat because it was too dark, but according to Advanced Etiquette, if this was the case, she was violating the number two rule of going to a movie - be on time. "There's no excuse for entering the theatre and disrupting those who were courteous enough to arrive on time," reads the site.
She also says that she has texted in all the other theatres in Austin and nothing happened so she should be free to text in the Alamo because it doesn't bother anyone. The Alamo and Advanced Etiquette disagree. "Some people think text messaging is a remedy for not talking in the theatre. These people are wrong," reads the Advanced Etiquette site. "The glare and glow of the cell phones is just as disturbing as the ring and noise of a conversation."

Maybe some people are just meant to only watch movies at home.

Most of the other patrons in the theatre are probably right there with the Alamo in thanking the woman for not coming back.

The Alamo will be playing the uncensored version of the video, or as they call it the "Don't Talk or Text" PSA, before all of their R-rated movies this weekend.
Game, set, and match.

If I were a theatre manager, those would be my top two rules as well. The 'turn-off-your-phone' reminder that gets displayed in the cinemas around here are too friendly which cause some people to think that it doesn't apply to them.

During the last few years when I went to the movies, there were always at least a couple texters with glowing screens (and on fewer occasions I would sit near people who thought the cinema was their living room), and more than half the time these people were either in front of or next to me and texting more than 3 times, prompting me to politely but firmly asking them that they postpone the addictive behaviour until the end of the film. Since all of these people never touched their phone again until the movies were finished, I guess what they were doing wasn't important and could definitely wait; however, it definitely shows how some people don't have the common courtesy and common sense, simply couldn't care less, just or really bad with physics

If you need to check your friends' facebook updates or texting them every five minutes, why are you in the theatre in the first place? And if it's something urgent or important, why are you still in the theatre?

I agree....if you are in a movie theatre and the film has started ALL cellphones should be turned off....this same rule applies to golf courses....nothing worse than some dipshit's dumbass custom ring tone blaring as you are putting.

Yes, and in the movie theatre, don't flip your phone open to endlessly check the time. The room is dark for a reason!!!!! :frusty:

Awesome, etiquette and lack of consideration for others seems to be rampant, especially in larger cities these days. Love to see a company stand up for their rules and I'm sure the majority appreciate this as well.

Now this topic should be combined with the death penalty thread. Summary execution for children kicking the back of my seat...

There's also the tendency for the flipside too-- incredible intolerance for any behaviour that is slightly less than perfect.
I don't have any problem if the guy next to me sends a text during a movie. Big fucking deal. If he continued repeatedly I'd find it annoying and ask him to stop.

The fact that people are so quick to berate and hate on anyone infringing on them even in the slightest degree is reminiscent of fundamentalist religious fanaticism. Hate anyone who doesn't do things your way!

Doesn't anyone here fuck up sometimes and need a gentle reminder? Why get indignant about it? Are we not just flawed humans living in a fucked up society?

She really did get indignant didn't she?
..plus she apparently had two warning and screen reminders
I am siding with the theatre on this one
My comments are about society in general, not this particular case. She was warned and the theatre rightfully kicked her out.
