They've made a movie about Idi Amin. I'm not sure if the young ones on Perb knows who Idi Amin is. I sure do, I still remember late night news at age 10 about this Ugandan dictator. He's a ruthless son of a bitch who's beaten, tortured and killed thousands. Sadam Hussein is a goody two shoes compared to Idi Amin.

Forest Whitaker supposedly has done the best acting job in Hollywood history!
I personally would give the award to Nautica Thorn for her role in Ass Worship.

One of Idi's pogroms was directed at the East Indian population of Uganda. As in many countries, the East Indians had a better head for business than the indigenous people, and ended up virtually owning Uganda - transportation, trucking, commercial real estate, the kind of stuff that countrys' economies are made of.

Idi figured he could make a lot of political mileage by dispossessing the East Indian population of their assets. The East Indians weren't too pleased about this, so Idi and his goon squads beat, tortured and murdered a lot of them - one of his favourite methods of quieting dissent was to throw the dissenter to the crocodiles - one commodity with which Uganda is well endowed.

A number of foreign countries who maintained embassies in Uganda helped many EI's to escape to their countries, even making sure that cash and valuables were smuggled out in diplomatic pouches and re-united with their owners at the eventual destination.

This was truly one of the human rights crises of the last century. If you ever meet an EI and they say that they were once a Ugandan resident, remember this little bit of history and know that they have suffered a 'holocaust' of their own.

That's it for today's history lesson folks - now back to being a redneck curmudgeon...

It's a shame that the Ugandans and the Ugandan exiles did not see justice.

Some people just want to get on with living their lives - they don't like to go around wearing their 'holocaust' on their sleeves.

Many of the East indians emigrated to Canada. I have a few friends from there.
Also Ida Amin practiced a form of canibalism were he ate parts of his enemies!

I remember him....most of the EI migration happened in the early 70's, and many ended up here in B.C. He was a buffoon, but a buffoon with power enough to kill millions.

There is NO subject taboo for a movie (or book, or film, or play....). Whether it is worthwhile or not depends on how it is done. If it makes you actually think about an unpleasant topic, it is usually good.

He went from being a Sargeant-Major to becoming a Field Marshall, all in just one coup!
