Mount Pleasant stroll

I don’t know if 411 is the best spot to post this...

Asking the older guys who knew the street walker scene in the 80s/90s....where exactly was the Mt Pleasant stroll in those days? I can remember as a kid hearing about prostitution in such a nice sounding area like “Mt Pleasant” it seemed so out of place. Now I live in that area, and I’m often driving around wondering where the hookers use to be. I’m guessing not just on the Kingsway stroll that exists now...maybe in the more industrial area around where Hootsuite is located?

Any old timers care to share old stories from the area? Where was it? Where were the tricks being turned? Any hotels or spots or just in cars? How much did it cost? Any great lookers or was that more of a low track?

Thanks fellas.

My former sister-in-law lived there in the late 70's and early 80's.

It was always a problem driving there to visit, especially finding un-harrased parking, both by the girls and the LEO's.
She was on 8th, between Guelph and St. Georges, across from Mt Pleasant Elementary.
The empty school grounds at night made it a quiet, more open area.
The poor school had condom/needle issues overnight...

The girls looked like they were living a hard life, and things got rough sometimes.
My sister-in-law would toss peach pits from her 3rd floor window at the johns and the girls.
With her lights out, of course, and she would stand back from the window so she was unseen.

It was an ugly neighbourhood back then, since if you could afford it, you moved out..
You could see the girls in the evening walking about in their mini skirts and thigh high boots.
They would be on Broadway nearby too at times.
And a lot of lookers cruising by. Cars, cars, and more cars.
Don't romanticize it, it was Mt Unpleasnt.

I thought it was up and down Quebec St North of Broadway, maybe to about 4th or 5th?

Back then, as far as the cops were concerned, all of Broadway, from Knight street to the dry cleaning shop that you can drive through and below Broadway was Mt. Pleasant, lol.

I'm old enough to remember 'ladies of the evening' hanging out on Georgia St at Howe, under the Air Canada awning, dressed in 6" heels, fishnet stockings, and fur coats. They were gorgeous. Then traffic moved to Davie Street in the west end, then on to Richards and Seymour (the gay boys on Homer), then onto Quebec St between 2nd and Broadway and later up Kingsway. And of course always Hastings and Powell for the crack hoes. You could waste hours driving around checking out the girls, back in the day!

What's the name of that strip club on Seymour? The Penthouse or something like that?

I remember you could drive by there and see a little group of working girls on the corner across the street and they'd be gorgeous chicks. I couldn't believe my eyes when I first saw that because where I'm originally from, street walkers are not hot.

Seems like they're gone from there now though. This was before the internet provided a warmer location to advertise their goods.

The girls on Seymour were out as recently as a few years ago, and yes near the penthouse.

They seemed to only come out late as I recall, 12am or after. Catching the horny guys coming out of clubs after striking out I would assume.

Does anybody remember Franklin St? Underage girls there? Any truth to that? I remember crusing it back in the day with friends when we got cars (16-18yrs old ourselves).

not truth from my experience. i only recall older hags by franklin. i was robbed there once. $20.00 IIRC. this was back over 25 years now. got me to drop my pants .. which i did .. and then she ran. wasn't going to give chase as she pulled my pants down to my ankles for a blow job i was apparently not getting. =))) i laugh now but it was frustrating at the moment.

i remember the nights where i used an entire tank of gas cruising the so called low/mid/high tracks. there were a lot of street walkers back then.

Haha those were the days (cruising). Walking with some booze was always fun too. Sounds like it still could be.

I put a lot of miles on the car at cruising the strolls. Usually started at Kingsway and Joyce, would head down to Broadway, cruise there from Nanaimo to Quebec, up and down Quebec then head downtown for a cruise. If I got desperate or had a lot of time to kill would go down and do the Hastings stroll and then start over. Killed many a nights and burned a lot of fuel doing that. I even wrote off my Mom's car once while looking at lady instead of where I was going.
Met some interesting ladies back then. Damn I feel old now!

Actually, they've been gone before 2010, I strongly remember the local government all talking about cleaning up the dt streets before we show off our city to the world. Cleanup homelessness and rid the dt area of ladies of the night!....Well, they succeeded on 1 out of the 2 :p
"SeeMore" was awesome back in those days, used to headout on the weekend to drink with buddies at the peelers or clubs, and for no particular reason, we'd always cut through Seymour to head home or back to Granville Station. The chicks were hot, yet conservative as they don't really come out and ask if you wanna fuck or get a bj, hahah. I wished I'd tried one of them, but never had a chance with buddies always around. Those were the carefree days....

They may have been gone around 2010 but they were definite back there 2014-15 time frame. I spent some nights at the PH and they were always there when we left. $300+ though.

Speaking of which, the PH has questionable talent on stage, but endless women walking around offering private dances. Odds are they do more offsite... Anybody tried?

I remember in the 80's there was a stroll down Jervis to Davie. I also remember in the mid 200x'x there was a stroll on Seymour, and wasn't there several on Kingway, one by Joyce, one from Edmonds to 10th, and then if you kept going into New West there was another stroll on 12th. I don't know where there is any stroll now. What every happened to Hat Trick, he was a stroll guy, he would know.

$300 and up sounds about right, plus hotel so you were looking at one hell of a price tag in the end. I remember asking one of the girls her fee when I was leaving a club downtown and that's basically what she said.

Another noticeable thing, there were working girls lined up in the back of the clubs near the end of the night just waiting for propositions. You could tell who they were because they always looked ready to leave (coats on, purse over shoulder the whole time), weren't socializing, and if you tried to hit on one like they were a civilian they'd get dismissive real quick. I got lucky a few times and managed to get with a few but that was before I actually started in the hobby.
