Most unaffordable housing in Vancouver? We are still the greatest city in the world!

What a surprise! I was going to purchase a 800k apartment in Yaletown today...then came to my senses and realized I can buy a mansion in Phoenix with a massive swimming pool for 350k. Not to mention, I won't be living in a concrete jungle, surrounded by yuppies and faggots...But I don't care what people say, Vancouver is the greatest city in the world! Plus, life doesn't get more exciting than the Canucks! Who would want to lie around a pool and soak up the sun, and be in shorts all the time? I prefer darkness, rain, bums on every corner, and 800 sq foot homes!

Greatest city in the world? I don't think so. Lot's of negatives here. Too much rain and way too damn expensive! The BC after Vancouver stands for "Bring Cash". Lot's of it. Was checking house prices in Miami. Can get a nice place there for about $250,000. Go figure. Average price here $589,000. Ridiculous! Plus the women here suck! Lot's of them are stuck up goldiggers!

No, and they haven't for almost 30 years. The median income here is somewhere around 60k; I don't know how people do it.

"At approximately 270 sq. ft. — And yours for only $750 a month!! If you don't mind living in a shoebox
And located near Pigeon Park to boot. They can keep it. I pay less for 1000 sq. ft.

"At approximately 270 sq. ft. — about the size of two municipal parking spaces — the market rental units will be the smallest in the city."

And yours for only $750 a month!! If you don't mind living in a shoebox
You figure that it's going to happen eventually. I visited a relative living in Paris and his apartment was basically that, except not as nice, and maybe even smaller. Somehow, they still managed to fit a kitchen and bathroom in there. For a single person, it's not as bad as you would think.

Vancouver is barely a city let alone the self proclaimed "greatest city". I was in Austrlia shorty after sydney was named the most livable city and the people didnt believe the BS and hype like vancouver does about itself

Living in an urban wonderland does come with a steep price but it's worth every cent.

Some people like Vancouver because of the weather, diversity, outdoors, girls, and many more.

Just a simple food for thought on why Vancouver Rocks for me:

Vancouver has the fastest growing downtown core in North America and has become a showcase for the greatest urban experiment to take place in Canada in about half a century, one that has made Vancouver the envy of city planners around the world. Having Vancouver as its inspiration, the United Arab Emirates has brought in the Vancouver Planning Mafia to give super rich Abu Dhabi and eccentric Dubai an extreme makeover. To recreate Vancouver in Abu Dhabi, Sheik Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, considered the most Western of Emirate leaders, poached former Van planning czar Larry Beasley and five senior staffers from his planning department. While Dubai, a desert kingdom well known for its look-at-me architecture, have former Concord Pacific senior executives helping them market its real estate model to the whole world. The Dubai Marina, the world's largest manmade marina filled with seawater from the Persian Gulf, bears an uncanny resemblance to Concord Pacific's False creek development right down to the handrails on the seawall. Global enthusiasm for Vancouverism does extend far beyond the Emirates. Delegations of urbanists from the United States, Finland, China, and France are regular visitors to Vancouver. San Francisco and Seattle has adopted the Vancouver model to revitalize its Rincon Hill and South Lake Union neighborhoods respectively. Same goes with recent urban developments in San Diego, Chicago, and Dallas. That's why I'm proud of this beautiful city. :)

Nothing wrong with being proud of it, but it's a big leap to call it the greatest city in the world. Some of these people need to travel more. There's more to life and being a great city than natural surroundings, beaches and West 4th. I reckon a lot of them haven't been east of Cambie; I don't know how you can unequivocally call a city 'great' when you're only referring to the West side. I highly doubt that Vancouver's east side plays into many people's consideration of Vancouver as a great city. New York, Rome, Milan etc etc are great cities all-around, not just one-half.

the median income is 60 k thats actually household, so its counted as two people not one
Correct...actual median income per working person is 34k in BC.

Why do you think so many girls work as SPs? They dont want to serve coffee and muffins all day at two jobs, to make 26k before income tax...

Too busy to consider working for them but I do support them as well as my other peers in the industry who believes in the City of Vancouver. Forgot to mention that in 2008, Vancouver ranked the highest in the Economic Intelligence Unit's list of livable cities. Plus, Conde Nast Traveler Magazine voted Vancouver the " Best City in the Americas ". The majority of the city's population are hardworking respectable individuals who believes in making a difference for their beautiful city.

Well said. No place is perfect, but we certainly are the envy of many cities around the world. Having lived in and visited almost every major city in Canada, I can certainly say that this is the most livable place in the country. Those who don't like it here are more than welcome to pack their bags and move elsewhere. Nobody is forcing you to stay in Vancouver. There's a reason why an 800 sf shoebox costs $800K, and it's because relative to most other places, Vancouver is a *very* desireable and liveable city.
