Just wondering what other people think the most overpaid job is in the city?
I'm starting to think Real Estate sales people...they really don't add value...just suck up the money.

Please don't state they negotiate a better price for you. Negotiating is so easy and finding out the value range of your home, can be done in 15 minutes online. So I guess, you are paying thousands and thousands for a cookie cutter contract.

Premier Gordan Campbell and all his MLA cronies...

Story from the Georgia Straight...

Premier Gordon Campbell thanks health-care worker for complaining about MLA pay raises
Blog - News By Charlie Smith
Publish Date: May 18, 2007

Premier Gordon Campbell is sending standardized e-mails out to members of the public thanking them for writing with complaints about the 29-percent pay hike for MLAs. If the Campbell government's Bill 37 is approved, the premier will receive a 54-percent pay increase, jacking his annual compensation up to $186,200 per year.

Here's a copy of an e-mail complaint from health-support worker Kevin O'Neil. Campbell's appreciative response follows O'Neil's complaint, which cites a 25-percent drop in pay that he has endured over the past six years.

Subject: raise in pay

Dear Right Honourable Gordon Campbell

I have taken notice of the most recent willingness to give yourselves a raise in pay, in the past six years I have received a 25% decrease in my pay and the work became harder, I have not seen administration but the public bodies report had revealed they grew by 1/3 and their pay increased by 28% my scale of pay was determined through 15 years of equity studies and comparability studies prior to your decisions to compare me to a hotel worker whom now with tips makes more than I and legislate a decrease in my pay, I cannot afford to buy a condo and rent close to my job as transportation is a cost item I can’t afford, how do you justify all the pay increases you and your elected body approve , and yet I yield to approve quality over quantity when buying food as the interest on my debit lode now eats in to my food budget . I WORK FULL TIME I am a shift worker and seeking another job would create an unhealthy situation I assist my mom when her pension prevents her from dietary needs yet alone her pharmacare costs and yet you are blind to the real hidden costs of your tenure. I would like to denounce your pay increase and add an additional 25%deduction and still it would not have an impact as you have had on those you promised to share in BC’s growing economy and took their earnings to pay for the greed you and your legislature incurred .

Cordially

Thank you for your e-mail regarding remuneration for MLAs. This issue is a difficult one. We have held back from a previous attempt to address it and then moved to having an Independent Commission study the matter and bring forth recommendations. Their work was comprehensive and the details can be found in their report at http://www.leg.bc.ca/bcmlacomp/ . The contents of those findings will be reflected in the legislation that is currently being prepared for debate in the Legislature and it will be followed by a free vote. A date for the debates has not yet been set but we want to assure you that we have noted your objection to our going forward.

I don't think the premier's salary is inflated. Seems reasonable for his type of job and responsibility. $150,000 to $180,000 is good income but not extraordinary nowadays.

Those Nasty Realtors

Ok , so I'm one of those people who have the dubious honour of choosing to be a realtor. For those of you who dont know, we rate on about the same level as lawyers on the popularity scale. We all know those vile creatures-realtors, they get paid enormous amounts of money to do practically nothing , and then take long vacations and drive expensive cars....
If you have personally had a bad experience with a realtor I dont really want to hear your horror story, but what I would like to do is clarify so of the misconceptions that you may have about us Realtors.
What other job do you know that you could go to work for hours and even days or weeks and not get paid at all. It would be like a doctor not getting paid until he actually cures your rash of unknown origins. He would pay for all your medications and tests and even the flight to the specialist, and if he didn't cure it he didn't get paid. Does that sound like a job that you would like to do? No?
How about if you went to work at the box factory and found out that you were going to work for an indeterminate amount of time and not get paid until the box actually sold to someone. That you might get paid less than you originally though because the purchaser of the box and your boss made a great deal, but since your boss has given away some of your money to make the deal go through, you are being asked to reduce your pay by 50%, Sounds like a great deal?NO?

Being a realtor is Expensive: between my car/ advertising/ office and desk fees /photocopying/ gifts to clients/ cell phone/ professional fees and insurance it cost me well into $35,000-$40,000 per year just to hang my shingle( PS my car is a used Chevy Malibu) This includes the cost of marketing homes that don't sell , those advertsing costs and time spent are not re-embursed by the sellers, remember I only get paid when the house Sells.

To become a realtor took several hundred hours of studying and courses and a three hour written exam , just to get started. After that there are additional continuing education courses every year, which I pay for myself.

Do you know how much a good realtor struggles with ethics and treating people fairly? Let me sit you down one day and discuss the issue of Agency which in essence obligates me for life to not divulge ANY informatin at ANY time to any buyer or other realtor that may compromise you position as a seller now or in the future, If you have been my client. Forever? yes forever. We are required to take an ethics course every two years just to stay up to date on the newest developements. Don't you wish lawyers were required to do the same?

Then there are the people who think they want 20% more for their place than the neighbours house sold for last week. Weeks go by and they can't figure out why they are not getting any showings, Trust me people its not the realtor, its the price. How many times do we as realtors hear : You just aren't advertising enough, you aren't working hard enough. What am I suppose to do? Lie to the buyers and tell them that the neighbours house next door didn't sell last month for 20% less? Buyers are not stupid. Trust me, we WANT your house to sell, cause we dont get paid unless it does.
If you want to sell your house quickly here are some general rules 1/ List close to what the realtor shows you it should sell for, don't try to find the one stupid buyer who is willing to pay more, there are lots of smart ones who are willing to pay market value 2/If your property is unclean or cluttered you will not get top dollar and it will take longer to sell. Buyers can't see past the mess. 3/ Do not try to hide faults, they will find them. 4/Buyers dont care about the new wallpaper you put up or that the toilet is new, they can see within 30 seconds whether they like the house. The new toilet in an otherwise unrenovated house is NOT value added. 5/It doesn't matter how much you pay the realtor. Really your focus should be on getting the most exposure to the most buyers, and DECIDING WITH YOUR REALTOR what you can expect in your pocket after the deal is done. Most Realtors are knowledgable and are not just making up numbers, they really do know what your house is worth. Whether you want to listen is up to you. Do you ask the Lawyer, Dentist or Doctor to take a pay cut so you can get more money in your pocket? No? 6/ Don't be surprised that a good realtor will walk away from your overpriced listing opportunity. Its matter of making the best use of time, I can't waste time on something that will NOT sell. I run a business , Not a charity. I SELL homes, not LIST homes. 7/Selling your home is business NOT personal. Getting all upset about a low opening offer is not a personal affrontand attack on you, it is an OPPORTUNITY to negotiate with an interested buyer, dont mess it up. A bird in the hand ... as they say. Did you KNOW? As a realtor I didn't try to sell my own home. Why? Because I could not be objective enough to negotiate a good deal for myself. I would not have negotiated as hard and been as persistant as my Realtor was. Sure I can draw up the papers and put up the sign , but there is more to it than that. I hired another Realtor and paid them and got more money in my pocket than I would have if I had done it myself. Realtors know people who know people who want to buy property. We have people walk in our doors everyday who want to buy property. Buyers want to work with realtors , it doesn't cost them anything to have a professional help them with their purchase. Licensed Realtors must adhere to a strict set of rules when negotiating with buyers and sellers, no false or misleading representations must be made or we could loose our licenses and our livelihoods. Most realtors are hard working professional with families to feed and mortgages to pay. You are paying me for RESULTS, the years of relationships I have worked hard to build with other realtors and their buyers, and my expertise in negotiating to your benefit. If you want to save few thousand dollars ,let me get that scalpel and your can start cutting right now. I dont want sympathy, this is just a rave , but maybe its helps you understand just bit more how "Those Nasty Realtors"" feel on a bad day.

Realtors - worst ass kissers in the known universe

Ok, I'm sure there are a few realtors on here but I have a friend with some money. He buys lots of property. You wouldn't believe how these realtors behave around him. Constantly trying to buy dinner. Idiotic presents. They are the ultimate rent-a-friend if you've got cash. I wonder if he's figured out that when the money's gone they are gone?

I also vote realtor's, but only those working in markets with insane housing prices like Vancouver. The real issue is commissions haven't changed to reflect the insane increase in property prices vs. the much slower increase of inflation. When a million dollar property sells the commision might push $35k. Sure that's split 60/40/whatever and the offices take their cut. Now if the realtor was working his/her ass off for 6 months trying to get you the best deal I wouldn't bemoan him getting his $15k. I've however seen how some work and tend to price every property they list maybe 5% below market value. Invariably they sell immediately. So in at most one week of real work the realtor has made $15k. Almost double that if they are dual agency. These realtors can refuse to list your place if you ask too much so a guy like this can just pick and choose. Not bad work if you can get it.

I don't think the schooling requirements for being a realtor or knowledge in general is very difficult. This is why I have more respect for lawyers even, that's a very complicated field. What is hard is to build a name for yourself as a realtor. Very few make it big just because it's a numbers/rep game and it's really hard to get in with a company. But once you have it made, you have it made. People list with you just because you are well known. I think it becomes a big power trip for these people (ever notice the ridiculous pictures they plaster everywhere with themselves in some ridiculous pose?). Quite frankly I think the business is messed up.

I think a realtor's job is also much simpler with the Internet doing most of their work for them now too. Slap info into MLS, people look on their own time, they view a few they've honed in on, and there you go.

I really think we should all get behind services like 1% realty. Oddly enough it seems many realtors are advocating more than the standard 7/2.5% commision now. That's just nuts with these prices. They need a really good kick in the ass, we need to see graduated commisions based on listing prices, or just simply flat commisions.

I also don't think the premier is overpaid. I make more than him and I'm just some dumb schmuck. He's in charge of the entire freakin province. Give the guy a break.

I dont think anyone is overpaid.. if you feel you are underpaid then it is your own fault.. you should have gotten more of an education or tried to accomplish more with your life.. it is no ones fault but your own :p

but on that note i think that any form of royalty is overpaid considering they are no longer usefull, simply figureheads to certain societies and those ppl didnt do shit they just had the luck of being born into it

Ditto on the Premiers low salary.
I have staff that make more than him and do not have anywhere near the responsibilities he carries.
I would double the salaries of MP's and make them tax free and then watch the quality of the contestants rise substantially. You can't ask talented
people to accept the wage cuts necesaary to take an MP's position.
For that matter I also would move the capitol or at least the Parliament building to the mainland. Who would want to work over there and have to keep an apartment for yourself in addition to your familie's home elsewhere.

As to my vote for for overpaid, I'm leaning towards Vancouver city workers on strike. With no university training they are making upwards of 75K plus
and now they want 51 days off every year. Get a life!

the 'reply' from a realtor was a crock of shit ...

the guy says 'agency' means NEVER divulging anything about the deal?

Well, I filed a property tax appeal on my assessment and the guy from
BC assessment had spoken to the realtor who had listed the house and
divulged ALL the financial dealings that the owner/seller had involved
the house in and that was why it was 'priced so low' ... supposedly it
was a 'nearing foreclosure' sale ...

in reality, the guy smoked, lived like a pig, didn't fix one thing wrong
with the house, and the price he was asking to cover his financial
fuck-ups was way more than the house was worth had it been in
pristine condition!

The repairs on this place are approaching $30K and rising so the 'deal'
I got wasn't that great ... it reflected a sound house that needed some
fixing ...

But BC assessment ruled against me even when i brought the estimates
and photos because they said I got a deal 'under duress' and that was
what had determined the low price not the state of the house!!!

as for the premier ... he WAS getting a salary from the Provincial
Liberal Party in addition to his public salary ... so all the raise has
done is transfer the cost to the taxpayers ... again.

Oh yeah, no real problem with the salary ... just the pension!!!!

Good point about the premier's/MPs pensions. I have no issue with their salaries, but the pensions are way too easily achieved and very rich from what I recall. I wish I could just work 4 or 8 years or whatever and be set for life. They could get elected for a term, be completely useless, but still collect. In that respect, yes, they are overpaid.

Mine - I make more than an NHL defenseman, travel first class and stay in nice hotels, and only have to talk to shareholders and make approx 8 tough decisions a day. The long long hours and travel sucks but no doubt - i am way overpaid.

Smile - I love how once a day someone on this site asks people for their opinions in a thread, than upon receiving those opinions starts to attack or insult those parties that have replied. I answered a question posed by the initiator of this thread honestly...and actually admitted to being overpaid.

I'll probably get trashed but i think Dave Nonis has the most overpaid job. Im sure you can pay someone 1/4 of what dave is making
I doubt you'll get trashed, but then you can't entirely blame Dave. The Salary Cap and CHEAP ownership are the bigger culprits. Not to mention all those GM's who sign players to contracts that make no sense. (Also the fact that the Canucks ownership is still in a legal battle, probably doesn't help.)

Loungo Loungo Loungo... I'll cut him some slack, especially because the Canucks actually made the playoffs last year, and should do the same this year with the WEAK Western Division.
