The more sexual partners a woman has, and the earlier she starts engaging in sexual relations, the more likely she is to be infected with the human papilloma virus (HPV) and to develop cervical cancer (European Journal of Cancer Prevention, October 14, 2013). HPV also causes cancer of the throat (J Infect Dis, 2013 Feb 1;207(3):479-88 and Aliment Pharmacol Ther, Dec 5, 2013), cancer of the colon and rectum (Colorectal Dis, 2013 Aug;15(8):e420-8), and squamus cell cancer of the skin and penis. Furthermore, researchers have found HPV genetic material (DNA) in many cases of cancers of the breast (J Gynecol Cancer, 2012 Mar;22(3):343-7), ovaries (Int J Gynecol Cancer, 2013 Mar;23(3):437-41) and vulva and vagina (Obstet Gynecol, 2009 Apr;113(4):917-24).

How Common is HPV
HPV is the most common sexually-transmitted infection with more than 6.2 million North Americans infected for the first time each year. A review of 40 publications on HPV DNA detection in men showed that up to 73 percent of heterosexual men have had HPV (J Infect Dis, 2006;194(8):1044-1057). In women the highest prevalence of HPV occurs at age 20-24 and then peaks again after age 60 (CMAJ, October 15, 2002;167(8):871-873). Most men over 60 are unable to produce firm erections so they often do not use condoms and practice unprotected oral sex.

Sounds like you've done a ton of reading on the subject so perhaps you know the answer to my question: the last paragraph seems imply that people can get it more than once, so it's curable if detected? Also, how would one recognize that you have it?

No research needed. It's a virus so there is no "cure". It never really goes away but it's manageable by our own immune system.

"Sex is a numbers game for safe-sex obsessives, but in terms of numbers, the obsession may be spreading even faster than the diseases. Calls to the CDC’s National STD and AIDS Hotline rose from about 650,000 in 2001 to 777,266 in 2003—an increase of over 19 percent. Catherine Wild, a health-communication specialist who has been answering hotline queries for the past six years, says that herpes and HPV calls are the ones coming in fast and furious—this despite an overall 17 percent decrease in the rate of genital-herpes infection since the early nineties."

So they have been pushing the HPV vaccine on younger women. Does this imply older guys should get the vaccine too? (In my 50's)

The decrease in infections since the early nineties would be attributable to the heavy promotion and use of condoms among the general population. What are the rates of infection for the last five years? The increase in BB services in the sex industry and lack of care from the general population is what will start to increase rates of infection.
my experience has been that condom use is not that prevalent among the general population

also condoms are only partly effective against hpv as areas that normally are not covered by condoms get infected as well. the big decrease in hpv infection is due to the hpv vaccine being made part of the school vaccination program

The school vaccination program for HPV has only been implemented recently. Began 2008/09 school year in BC. Condom use NOW in the general population may be down, but in the 1990's, when the promotion of condom use began it ramped up considerably. The HIV rates in gay men dropped considerably once that community was educated about the need for condoms.

People are complacent now and think - A- "it won't happen to me." and B - "there's a cure for everything, including HIV, so what's the big deal?"

Hep-C is another one that's overlooked, lots of people don't know they have it, it's also sexually transmitted and costs about $75,000 per year per person to treat. They were discussing it on the radio the other day, freaky shit!
I listened to the same program.
