Fun Fact: Prince Harry could be crowned "King of Canada" under section 41(a) under our constitution.

An amendment to the Constitution of Canada in relation to the following matters may be made by proclamation issued by the Governor General under the Great Seal of Canada only where authorized by resolutions of the Senate and House of Commons and of the legislative assembly of each province:
(a) the office of the Queen, the Governor General and the Lieutenant Governor of a province

Even though Canada is an independent country according to the Canada Act of 1982, that was only 125 years after the founding of Canada as it's own autonomous country that was still loyal to the British Crown. So some antiquated verbiage translated into the Act give the Queen some power over Canada's politics. However, Canada's provinces would have to come to an agreement to allow Harry to take over as Governor General if this was actually going to happen. And even though "Wexit" is a sort of a thing, there is also the issue of Quebec as well; "King Harry" could be laughed out of parliament, or could gain traction depending on his supporters.

They live on a stipend from Prince Charles. If he decides to cut them off, or to just provide enough for the necessities of life, they'll need some other source of income to maintain the lifestyle to which they are accustomed.

Pretty sure those two could write or just put their names on a book every few years and probably take in more than whatever dad gives them.

Queen’s statement re Harry and Meghan today:

My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family. Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.
Harry and Meghan have made clear that they do not want to be reliant on public funds in their new lives.

he's a multi-millionaire, unless he blew thru his inheritance from his mother, he got an equal share when he turned 25

seen one estimate that he's worth 20-40 million

would have to assume she's got at least a million

it isn't like they've had to spend anything to live so far

No wonder the Prince hates the paparazzi and the London tabloids. Look what they did to his mom. The premier should tell the "toffs", as they are referred to above, that he is prepared to bring about anti-paparazzi legislation if necessary.

Their RCMP security cost will be what annually? A few millsky? Who cares? We should happily pay it.
Exactly. Stalking a person and ruining their life with harassment is a crime. Why should stalking a royal person be any less of one ?

There's more than enough room in BC for them to be isolated, places where the pappa-rats-ys could have to hike through the bush for days just to reach them (and no shortage of possible "hunting accidents" should the trespass ;) ).
I'm sure with his record of military service, Harry can manage to live out in the boonies.

The tabloid press didn't kill his mom. Dodi Fayed's drunk driving chauffeur killed her.

Why should Canadian taxpayers pay a dime for the two Toffs? If they want to be financially independent they can pay for their own security. As for "famousizing Victoria" their presence would add little to nothing compared to the costs of the RCMP babysitting them.

The papparazzi also didn't have to besiege the hotel Diana's party were staying at, nor chase them on motorcycles.

If a cop chases some criminal in a high-speed pursuit these days, the courts (wrongly, I think) put the onus on the cop for any damage or injuries, on the grounds that the police should not endanger anyone by continuing to chase them.

Yet the tabloids - who have no interest but milking these people for profits - get to hire these sicarios-with-cameras to hunt people down on public streets, and be spared any liability for the inevitable results? It's bullshit.

Anyone who's so concerned about the "costs" of royal security should go tax the tabloids, who cause most of the security issues and earn billions every year by criminally harassing people, even to the point of inducing them to take suicidal risks just trying to escape harassment.

Remember that these same tabloids also wilfully exposed Harry to danger while he served in Afghanistan, no doubt salivating at the potential to cover his death at Taliban hands.

You never see the Thai or Japanese royal family exposed to the level of abuse that our royal family gets. Those countries protect their royals, and their reporters do not flirt with regicide and call it journalism.

A drunk driver driving far too fast killed Princess Di. The Toffs take advantage of their celebrity status when it suits their purposes and then whine when it doesn't. The Canadian taxpayers should not have to pay for multimilliionaires who profess a desire to be financially independent and then want to continue sucking off the government tit.

If they want to come to Canada they can damn well pay for it themselves.

And get in the queue behind other would-be immigrants who have been waiting years to be allowed to come to Canada.

We are not a republic. They are part of Canada's royal family, our Crown. They cannot be foreign citizens in what is essentially their realm. What are they going to do, wait in some line to take a citizenship oath to themselves?

"I hereby swear allegiance to my dear gran ..." :moony:

They would have diplomatic immunity from the regular protocol, and some laws.
I believe that might include immigration, they cannot immigrate into a land that in some aspects , still is recognized as part of their families commonwealth.
They are Royals....the rules do not apply.

According to immigration lawyers quoted by John Ibbitson, writing in the Globe and Mail, under Canadian law Harry is just some bloke from Britain. We recognize the monarch of the UK as the monarch of Canada, but members of the monarch's family are nobody special, in legal terms.

One immigration lawyer suggested that if they were to decide to immigrate, it would be best for Meghan to be the primary applicant, and for Harry to tag along as her dependent. If Harry were to apply in his own right, he wouldn't have enough points to have much of a chance.

What is her status in Canada? She's American and only worked here in TV years ago.

I stand corrected. He could become a helicopter pilot, I am sure that's a much sought after skill that immigration officials are looking for.
Heli logging, firefighting, medi-vac.....past Hope, it's a full time job.
Chopper pilots have lifelined me out of a few situations in forest fires, just so I could still be here to annoy you people.
