Respect for Others
Pictures on the Web or not, Maverick was at the most insensitive to Bobbi's personal life/personal identity by approaching her in the conspicuous manner he allegedly did.
I have said it a million times to people who work with and for me that a breach of confidentiality is a breach of self respect and disrespect to other. Human nature is such that it will defy every effort to lump it into categories, whether it is done for convenience or by design. By Maverick calling out "Bobbivan" in public, it was a breach of her confidentiality and to her it felt like an attack on her personal identity. We all will always fight to protect our precious identity. Why? Because that is what transcends our short existence here and therefore must always be preserved.
Our persona, in public or private should always be respected; however, we do not always have control over what others may say or do. We do most of the times have control over what we share about ourselves and our behavior.
Most importantly, what we say and do to other people should be on their terms. In this case, it was on Maverick's terms and not Bobbivan‘s. Hence, a violation of her personal identity resulting in her anger.
Could this been handled differently by Maverick? Most definitely so. Was it done in malice by Maverick? Probably not, it was a spare of the moment unconscious act. Is Bobbivan's response the appropriate way of handling this matter? No, Bobbi could have addressed the matter on the spot, expressing to Maverick that his behavior was insensitive and inappropriate and/or at a later date in private. What's good for the Goose is good for the Gander.
It’s time for a Big Group Hug.
