Considering this is his fifth suspension, I'm surprised they didn't just turf him for the rest of the season, regular and whatever playoff round(s) the team gets to.

Thought they'd toss him thru the playoffs, too. NHL is a run by morons who don't realize they have a diminished product without stars.

Who pays to watch Matt Cooke?

Agreed....Cooke is a cheap POS.

I agree the Cooke is a cheap hitting POS and I would like to say that I think he got the suspension that Chara should have gotten....an elbow to the head and the guy who got the elbow and plays later in the game is a fuck of a lot less than driving a competitor into an imobile part of the rink.

This is a completely fucked way to apply the rules and Cooke is getting slapped with the punishment that Chara got away with.....total BS....but that is the way it is in when that sawn off RUNT Bettman is in charge of the NHL.

I suspect it wasn't that bad & quite a bit of play acting by the NYR player.
A minor penalty and be done with it.
Cooke skated across the ice and intentionally threw a lifed elbow. Intent to injure, no respect. past history. If you think that deserves a minor you've never played hockey.

Maybe in this era they'll throw the book at him, the rest of the season {10 games?}
and first round of the playoffs. In Lafleur's era if Bobby Clarke did that to him, it
would be a minor penalty, if the ref saw it.

News flash - it's not that era.

Wonder how many people thought Cooke was a great player when in a Canucks uniform? Seems when the "A**hole" is yours it is ok when he plays elsewhere he is a POS.

I wouldn't mind Cooke so much but he starts stuff and never mans up and faces the other teams tough guy. This head shot was totally premeditated and you could see it as he was skating along centre ice. Potentially 17 games or $250 K salary.

I couldnt understand why the management of the nucks resigned him when nonis/burke was around. Never did like the guy on ice that is.

Don Cherry once said , "in my day they used to call it a headache , now they have specialists and fancy names for everything"
Cooke has always been a cheap shot artist, AV hated him as he would give a dirty hit then turn turtle, and this is even better that Mario Lemeux was calling for bigger suspensions and his cheap shot player got it.

punishment fits the crime!
NHL should also take away the intentional knee on knee hits.

Wonder if Lemieux will come out and say anything or will he keep quiet now that it's his own player? I loved Super Mario as a player, but he'd be a huge hypocrite if he comes out and says he disagrees with the suspension.

Whether the Rangers player was injured or not shouldn't be a deciding factor. Cooke lifted his elbow up to hit someone's head, end of story. Using the injury thing, he should still be suspended for what he did to Savard. I think Cooke should of gotten the entire playoffs, but I don't know how serious the NHL is about head hits. The real test is next year when all the noise and attention dies down.
