This is about the shortage of hobbyist material supplies for your hobby. Not this boards hobby.

Its more about the high cost of raw material for home projects and it does relate to any small and medium business that need materials for their business. Its about where to get cheaper sources of quality products, from good sources. Bigger cities might have some price fluctuations .

Websites that don't name prices and ask for you to email, I find too time consuming. I would look for a price range (yes some products prices vary), but for websites that ask for emails, I find don't have any products on hand and have to order from another source. I 'd like to cut out the middle man, therefore decreasing price and increasing how far my money goes.

Example Aluminum.

If I am looking for extruded Aluminum bar (to use in a woodworking jig), the Aluminum is mined in Canada, sold to the USA company, melted into ingot or smaller blocks. Sold to a secondary Aluminum manufacture who makes the Extruded Aluminum bar. Which sold to a store in the states. This store sales to Amazon or a retail store. On Amazon the extruded Aluminum bar is sold at same price as the retail store. (The ideal of this is to make sure there are still retail stores in business). So some Amazon business, persons buys up all the Aluminum bars as they come on to Amazon, and resales at 50% higher. You always see this as one advertising space (has no price, or msg saying all sold out). There is always a second advertising space with the same aluminum bar, but at a higher price.

I would so like for Amazon to crack down on this price gouging/speculation.

If the product comes from the US, it is usually 2X the amount (import fee and price hike) and then Cdn taxes. Even US companies that have a Cdn outlet, have outrageous prices. Rocklear, Woodpeckers, etc.

The high cost of raw material prohibits manufacturing in Canadian, unless you can supply raw materials at a cheaper price. 30-40% of all mined Aluminum should be manufactured here in Canada and sold with min middlemen/companies.

So if you know decent places to get Wood materials- hard woods and softwoods

And metal materials like, extruded aluminum, metal- steel and aluminum; talk away.

Use local suppliers.
I make knives. Thompson metals in Langley has everything you need, if they don’t have it they will get it.
I get real Sandvik 15n20 from them.
Metal supermarket and Metalmart are also quite helpful.
Amazon will claim certain steels and when you get it it’s some lesser quality chineseum.
Windsor plywood in Langley has a tremendous array of beautiful hardwoods. Pricey on the exotics (Purple Heart wood from Brazil) but the final look is brilliant.

Among the Hill People
I was putting together a sluicebox, needed a small piece of expanded metal and stopped in at Amix Steel and Surplus near Ritchie Bros. in Chilliwack. Super nice people, one fellow was interested in my story and took me all over the yard looking for the right size piece, then gave it to me. YMMV, but lots of selection there.

Haven’t been there for a while but for 1/2 lengths and such, alder steel mart in Aldergrove used to be cheaper than metal mart etc. obviously you pay more for buying less than a full length. Some metal shops will sell crops from their scrap bins, usually the smaller shops are better, the bigger places either couldn’t be bothered or are worried that you will break a finger nail and sue them
I have had good luck buying from job shops, they cut to length and sell below store prices because they are buying from wholesale like samual and sons or alaskan copper and brass who have invoice minimum rules
