(brownelvis.....hmmmmmm )I went to a High school where whites were the minority. I lived in a very diverse city for much of my life. And now Vancouver is very diverse. I really like diversity and am proud to live in Canada for this reason.

You're right, I cannot understand another persons point-of-view, or maybe, just maybe, I am having a hard time reconciling your claims that racism is pervasive, given that the Metro-Vancouver area's population of coloured' people outnumbers those non-coloured people. Now if you are actually a gay, black, transvestite living in Wyoming, then your claims would have some weight behind them, but being coloured in Vancouver cannot be uncomfortable in the least.
and it is emblematic of the issue Normisanal (sorry norm but you are a bit anal) is raising - that whitefolk don't get that other folk can feel disempowered, and in fact are disempowered in North American society even today. Certainly few would argue that history has not been kind to non-whites in NA. I think Norm is simply trying to get folks to get into the head of a non-white person, who doesn't see their own image in positions of power and control.
Hoff, you are right that statistically MetroVan is less than 50% white these days http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Vancouver but I don't think that equates to the idea that anyone "being coloured in Vancouver cannot be uncomfortable in the least." The stats show that the closest rival to whitebread is chowmein and the gap is quite wide still. All other minorities are small population-wise and anyone who is a part of one of those groups would likely feel as Norm suggests, that is if they are the type of person who is concerned about it. Many folks of all shades of grey don't give a rats ass about any of it and when they encounter racism they brush it off because it doesn't really affect them for their whole life (at least that would be the thought process, or maybe why trouble myself with helping whitey get over his shit). Racism perpetrated by whites in NA is the one to be concerned about in NA, racism perpetrated by Japanese in Japan is the one to be concerned about there, and around the globe we go.
Kramer's rant was also emblematic of the attitude Norm is concerned with - he just doesn't get why there are these "equalizing" programs and institutions in the land of the freaks and home of the ignorant. That said, it is America that has run the world for quite some time so there is probably one or two smart fuckers down there. Their success has been because they put a higher percentage of their resources into wealthy people, which means less for the poor folk, who are predominately coloured in some shade. Their failure will come as a result of that growing inequity.
And I would like to taste that curry . . . and then dabble in some chowmein, maybe dip in some mayo, . . . actually I would really love to dip into mayo, chocolate, sweet'n'sour, curry all in one night. Can someone refer me to the four beauties please.
