As the gorgeous Miss America 2014 Nina Davaluri flaunted her crown with utmost grace, there were some who couldn't handle the prospect of a non-white, non-blonde, non-blue eyed woman of Indian origin winning the title. Racist comments flooded Twitter. While some unabashedly called her an Arab, refusing to
acknowledge her as an American, others just shook their heads in disbelief.

Pookie tweeted, "And the Arab wins Miss America. Classic."

Jessica Ayres sure didn't know what she was saying when she tweeted, "I swear I'm not racist but this is America."

"Miss New York is an Indian.. With all do respect, this is America," Savannah Dale echoed her thoughts.
.....

Others cracked the age old 7-11 Indian-American joke. CHEEZ-IT:

"Miss America? You mean Miss 7-11."

Now this was written by the Hindustan Times, so I take the facts with a grain of salt. Whether it was 100 or 10,000 protests against her is not the point - the point is the embattled point of view the Hindustan takes on these matters. As I said on another thread, it's not a level playing field, is it?

Um, angry racists are saying that a Hindu girl can't be an American because of the colour of her skin (and those are the nicer ones). What kind of point of view are they supposed to take?

I watched the last 20min so just caught the final 7 or 8girls. The right girl won. Its a beauty contest and the one from California, although, hot was not in the same league as NY.

2013 winner looks like she didn't skip many meals during her reign.

Well, I think the Miss America contest has been under a lot of flack to "modernize" themselves and get with this century. I hope she is able to rise above and enjoy her year as Miss America. But what I really wonder is this a "any publicity is good publicity" type of thing at her expense? I do not watch TV so I did not see the pageant.

Well now, so much for letting the thread play out LOL

For the record, I'd bang the shyte outta her
Or would that be oppressive?
No, you would be inspiring her, as any worthwhile girl should when she willfully spreads her legs for a man.

The only way you'd be oppressing her is if you said something like (not that you would),
"better than the brown boys, eh?", or
"of course you like me", or
"you're so exotic", or
"I've got brown/Indian/yellow fever", or
"I love curry".

As for Hoff, no, not all whites are racist. It's not about the minority or majority of whites being racist, whatever is truly the proportion. It's about that from the point of view of colored folks, that they have to constantly put up with the diatribe of racist crap like this, and that they talk about it in the Hindustan newspaper is a good example. This is another example of how in every day life coloured folks have to put up with white racism every day. It's pervasive.

Personally, I don't mind dipping into some curry. it keeps the chicken spicy. :eyebrows:
that was kind of funny, but not really.

If she was Asian, you'd probably say something like "sweet and sour sauce".

If she was white, what could you say? There's really nothing that funny, because while you can make fun of anyone, even white folks, it doesn't come off as that funny - at least not as funny as making fun of colored folks. Why is that? Because it's not funny to poke fun at the majority, and that's because they form the standard. It's the "other" that is odd, weird, unusual, and thus "funny".

Racists that are ignorant... hmm can't say that's much of a shocker.

What I find truly shocking is that anyone still actually even cares about the ridiculous, backwards, useless crap Miss America or any of those stupid pageant-competition-nonsense that belongs somewhere around 1955, not 2013.

I mean, Miss America! It's ridiculous, it's embarrassing and I can't imagine why anyone would still give a shit about Miss America anymore. Who cares. Who cares. Who cares.

I cannot wrap my mind around this.Ugh.
*vomit*

That is all.

Miss America walks the very fine line between objectification of women and the exaltation of a certain kind of femininity (there are other kinds of course, such as motherhood, sisterhood, sluthood, Mary, Athena, Medusa, and other female archetypes), so I can understand why it offends some women because by nature it constricts them. However, men are judged accordingly as well, even as they are far less constricted by them, I believe it is part of the human process and it is necessary to have archetypes. It's part of human nature and while things like this can be difficult to accept, we should just let it be.
