Okay before I get into the Province's article... I would like to state that I think that his sentence should be the following - put in a room, with 10 female prostitutes, armed only with their fists & ONE blunt object. Each female allowed 2 hits to his face & one hit with their blunt object. Anyone disagree?

CRIME: Police looking for links to other attacks

A Vancouver man once charged w/conspiracy to commit robbery has been arrested in connection w/a rash of violent attacks on city sex-trade workers.

PAUL CELA, 24, was arrested New Year's Day after he allegedly picked up a prostitute @the intersection of Salsbury Drive & Franklin Street, then drover her to a parking lot @the intersection of Frances & Clark.

Const. Howard Chow says a dispute of some kind (!?) erupted in the car & CELA allegedly punched the woman TWICE in the face before reaching into the back of the car, grabbing a blunt object & hitting her over the head w/it.

The woman was able to escape the car & call 911, giving officers the vehicle's licence plate number.

CELA was arrested later that night @his home in Vancouver, Chow said. He faces assault & other charges.

Officers are now investigating whether CELA is the man responsible for 7 similar attacks in December.

The Vancouver Police Department issued a warning about an unknown attacker Dec. 23. At the time, police said they were investigating 4 complaints from sex-trade workers who had reported that a man had sexually assaulted them & stolen their valuables.

In at least 1 December incident, the suspect hit a prostitute on the head w/a blunt object.

CELA was arrested in July 1999 along w/7 others & charged w/conspiring to commit robbery. Police arrested them after firing gas canisters thru the window of a van. The van contained weapons.

A woman who identified herself as a member of CELA'S family but refused to give her name said the recent charges have "devastated" the CELAS.

However, she said, police have the wrong man. "He has problems, but he wouldn't do such a thing," she said.

Chow said police are asking anyone who may have been attacked by someone matching CELA'S description to call them ASAP.

CELA is 24, 5'9", about 161 lbs., w/a pimply face & black hair worn in a buzz-cut style.

Please, please, please SWs (who just happen to have internet access & log into Perb) Do talk to the Police. If you believe, even remotely that this man has attacked you. Silence is NOT golden in this instance. Only united can we SPs be strong. Don't let this snowball into another Picton affair.

I have never been a SW but have been a CG, & have only once been abused by a "john" It was a horrendous feeling. I did not or rather it did not cross my mind to call the cops. But they are there, for you.

Why do reporters phone this guy's mommy and ask her opinion? Of course she's going to say her kid wouldn't do that! Her family is devastated, what about the girl that got clobbered? Mommy didn't ask how she was doing did she?
Was there no resolution of the earlier charges involving the conspiracy to commit robbery? He seems well on his way to being a habitual criminal. If the guy's brain is wired that way there is no rehabilitation, put him away for twenty years and the minute he gets out he'll rob someone.
DU, read Sonny Barger's book, specifically the chapter about the time his bike got stolen...much more apprpriate. Car(and bike) thieves have zero interest in how you feel, they'll just try harder next time.

Nahhh-Why don't we all get a rope, head on down to Police HQ this evening and string the bastard up right now. That'll fix it Billy Bob. And nobody'll ever get beaten again.

I undrestand the anger that you feel. However, I must protest your suggestion that 'street' vigilanty justice is the answer to anything.

We live in a violent society. Each of us has the capability within to chose violence. That you chose violence, or wish to, does nothing but spread more violence. Hate begets hate. Violence, violence. It really is that simple. This fellow needs at least as much compassion as the SW who was beaten. He also needs to do his time for his deeds. Beating him will do nothing but bring more pain to an already painful situation.

I also understand that as the victim of a violent crime you may not agree with any of this. But I do ask you, would killing the fellow who attacked you really fix the helplessness that you feel?

I had a relationship with an SP for almost 20 years, she's been retired now for a couple of years but is still one of my best friends.
She got beat up once, really bad. I'd still like to kill the guy that did it. I've taken some wicked beatings myself, but hers bothered me a lot more. Unless it's happened to you, don't even pretend to understand.

You didn't answer me, What would you do if a SW threatened you with a used needle?

Sure, anyone would defend themselves, but there's no evidence that that is what happened in this case. Even if it did, the use of force in self-defence always has to be be reasonable. It seems to me that once you pummel her a couple of times in the head, going for the blunt object to make sure is a bit over the top. Rather than reaching into the back for an additional weapon, one could get out of the fucking car.

Assuming he is guilty, and everyone should be presumed innocent and given the right to defend themselves, Carlotta's original suggestion doesn't seem to me to be totally unreasonable. I would only add that afterwards his victims might want to have a go at him with cattle prods

Lets say the case was that this guy was getting jacked up by a some crackhead with a used needle. Sure, there reasonable force for self defense but I wouldnt fault him for getting angry and kicking some ass or trying teach the crackhead a lesson.

Law and justice are tough topics: there may be 10% of the people incarcerated by mistake (or on purpose) among the 90% who did commit a crime?

How many who have committed a crime never do time?

David Milgaard was a tragic example, but it really is an exception to the general rule. The laws are tougher on prosecution and there are more technologies that can make a case and unmake it just as quickly (as in Milgaard's situation).

Bottom line is that there are lots of people who should be in jail who aren't and lots of people who are in jail who shouldn't be (despite committing a criminal act) -- but who is going to decide?

vigilantism is typically a reflection of the masses frustration with other matters that is directed at what seems to be a reasonable outlet at the time.

I think it says they are investigating him for a string of other asaults because he has the same M.O., in other words, the grabbing of an object to bonk her over the head. There are many ways to assault a person but he did the one thing that has been done before.

As to his innocence, I find it very hard to believe there are a rash of DIFFERENT crackheads with a dirty needle deserving of a "lesson" all of a sudden, and find it more plausible that the guy snapped and started commiting these assaults just like the police think he did. As to his motives, maybe he is crazy and has an excuse, maybe he thought she was a spider and was trying to squash her? Who really knows, but either way he needs to be declared a dangerous offender and kept on a short leash for the rest of his life.

I predict he will be denied bail, then will plead guilty to get a reduced sentence! And nobody who was wrongfully accused would ever plead guilty! Unless the crime was slight enough that the dead time would be more than the sentence, which in this case it isn`t. He`s looking at 5 years with a weapon involved, still not enough!

Once he pleads guilty, THEN a beating is in order, by his peers, not a mob! (unless I get to be part of the mob, lol.) The men in jail try to deter crimes against women and children, and that means a beating, sorry, but it`s all he will understand, call it a deterent. Violence against women = violence on your person. If he raped her he will get a severe life threatening beating then spend the rest of his time in PC with the worst scum that will make him very sorry he joined their ranks! I think rapists (skinners) are more reviled then anyone in jail. My proof is that Picton still lives.

Why can't we make speculations without all the facts, do you really think they are going to tell the media, therefore us, anything? A judge will decide his fate, not us anyway, get real.

This will be decided shortly, but there is nothing wrong with predicting anything. Maybe I have paid more attention to the criminal system than some of you and I believe I can predict what he will do. Someone commited these crimes, what makes him look innocent when he was caught red handed when she saw his license plate? She has probably ID'd him in a lineup too or it wouldn't have gone this far.

I have noticed that the police in Canada do things for a reason and are seldom wrong, except 20 years ago when red necked power tripping prairie cops wanted someone to blame instead of making the world a safer place. I'm with LG, I believe Milgard was a huge exception!

PS Good for you Alex for voting no, now no to capitol punishment has 23% of the vote. Obviously my slanted poll was slanted in the right direction.

Well then, my speculation is that a crack whore tried to rip him off. If he cruises the track then he's proably been ripped off before and had enough this time. He fought back to protect himself and then added a few extra shots - in part because he was mad at all the other scammers and in part for the vigilanty

This is not a sudden "rash" happening recently, but a common
occurence in that area {it just doesn't hit the news everyday}.
For these people are in a very dangerous, violent neighborhood
{with the emphasis on "hood"}, & they are a big part of the
reason why it is that way.

Hardcore crackheads are unusually irrational & selfish, & they
tend to be liars & thieves. Along with their other physical and
psychological problems besides the drug dependency that
controls their lives, this is a mix waiting to explode. Some
have already flipped out while with the others the fuse is lit.

Take, for example, the SW i know who lost it and broke the
arm of an elderly landlady. Or check out the Neighborhood
Watch section of PERB.

That being said, though, i am not taking sides against these
SW women {or men dressing as women} as i am down there
regularly providing them food, transport to the hospital, safe
company, companionship, or whatever they need.

Now we've come 180 degrees from the original post, instead of assuming the guy deserves whatever is coming to him, the concensus is that the SW was a crackhead who deserved what she got and the guy is a victim trying to defend himself. Was anyone here an eyewitness?
