Ah yes psychology...

Been in school for just that very reason - psychology...

Actually I did a paper on that... LOL

BDSM is in the DSM IV as a mental disorder...

If dysfunctional means I've placed fulfilling my desires over other other responsibilities from time to time, then I may be in trouble. Anyone have recommendations for a treatment?

302.83 Sexual Masochism

In order for BDSM to be a disorder BOTH A and B must be present:

A. Over a period of at least 6 months, recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors involving the act (real, not simulated) of being humiliated, beaten, bound or otherwise made to suffer.

B. The fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.

302.84 Sexual Sadism

In order for BDSM to be a disorder BOTH A and B must be present:

A. Over a period of at least 6 months, recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors involving acts (real, not simulated) in which psychological or physical suffering (including humiliation) of the victim is sexually exciting to the person.

B. The fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.

Aeiyah:

Do your desires interfere with you ability to function in daily life? Do they interfere with your work? Family life?
(More so than any other "normal" hobby or pastime - some people will take a day off work to go to a game, or stand in line, or recover from a hangover. Comparatively speaking, as opposed to chronic behaviours or impulsive/addictive behaviours like draining a joint bank account to pay for a pro-domme and now scrambling to make rent money.)

Do your desires cause you worry or stress that manifests itself in anxiety, feelings of physical discomfort, insomnia or any other such symptom of stress due to intensity of desire (while not actually engaged in fulfilment), or worries about image, reputation or even self-loathing?

If you answered "no" to these questions, you do not have a personality disorder, but a personality style.

I'm guessing that you feel that the "A" criteria struck a chord with you, but both A and B are requisite for it to be a disorder. Something becomes a disorder when it becomes maladaptive, unhealthy, destructive or impairs the ability to function productively.
In the case of these disorders, the cure may be worse than the disease. ;-)

Hope this made you feel better.

Welcome to Perb Rumply

Those who have been around here for while and have seen a lot of my other posts know that I was being facetious. I have, though, on occasion taken a day off a particular opportunity for adventure comes up and will do so again at the drop of a hat.
