Anyone see Madonna defending her purchase, er adoption of an African souvenir, er child? Awkward moment when Madonna tried to adopt Oprah. (That line courtesy of Craig Ferguson).
Only saw a few moments of the show. Oprah Uma was at her her usual fawning
best and basically let Madge read her prepared, well-rehearsed statement. Don't know if anyone got to axe any questions.

Who Misses Oprah????

Hell yes I saw that!

It seems as though although the IDEA is good...Madonna never does ANYTHING unless it causes a buzz.

I'm sure the kids' gonna get very well cared for however.....whats the harm?

Brad and Anglina do it at least every six monthes....adoption.....its like a pap smear!!!!

HAHAHA!

Ok men aren't getting that.

I just can't help thinking that for all the money Madge spent, (to buy/help/adopt/make a fashion statement about this ONE child), she could have set up a foundation in Africa to help thousands of Children.

But then- I dont have the money either so - ...
Cheers

Actually she has pledged to donate $3 million to ophanages in the country. I'm not a Madonna fan but I don't see what the big fuss is all about. Do these fuckhead 'human rights activists' truly believe that this kid will have a better life living in a shithole (the news described it as dilapidated) orphanage than he would living with Madonna. It isn't like there is a lineup of Malawian people lined up to adopt him so his fate is either being left in an orphanage with poor health care, poor nutrition, and poor education or being adopted by Madonna where he will probably receive the best of everything.

The kid is 13 months old and he has already had malaria, tuberculosis, and pneumonia, if these 'human rights activists' have their way and send him back to the orphanage he'll be lucky to survive to adulthood and if he does the chances of him escaping a life of poverty will be slim to none. Yep being adopted by Madonna sure sounds like a horrible fate when he could have the pleasure of being sent back to the orphanage.

i dunno guys, i'd have to say if i were a 13 month old orphan that was riddled with disease and had either the rest of my life hanging out with madonna, or rotting away in an orphange in a third world country with nothing to look forward to other then a meal of grubs and silty brown water....i'd choose the orphanage.

Great, donate lots of money and help lots of orphanages/orphans… a most needed and admirable humanitarian gesture.

… but really, what absolute difference is made when the celebrity adopts that single child and uproots it from it’s native language, customs, culture, remaining family, etc? Certainly, we should anticipate a better quality of life for the adopted child – notwithstanding any mixed race aspects… but beyond that, what?

Are there no needy (North) American children to adopt? Might some equate celebrity adopted babies to “fashion accessories”?

The Third World child is the new chihuahua.
Big improvement over the chihauhau of the 1950's 60's

Truman Capote

To be honest I dont understand all the fuss, he was a child will all sorts of medical problems who wasnt even being treated for his pnuemonia! Madonna had him taken out of the orphanage and taken to a clinic where he was given the proper anti-biotics that he needed and that the orphanage was unable to give him.

None of his family had visited him the entire time he had been at the orphanage, 16 months

So he gets adopted by Madonna and is given the best education etc that money can buy and he can go back and help his country.
She plans to take him back at least twice a year and she has also said that she will make sure that he is exposed to his culture/heritage and customs throughout his life.

I think the kid got a lucky break and has won the lotto, for the next 18 months Madonna is being monitored by a social worker before the adoption will become permanent.

If anything I think Madonna is being put through the wringer!
I don't see Angelina going through the same BS and she has adopted 2 already and has said this is only the beginning that her and Brad plan to adopt a dozen or more children.

and another thing, this isnt really a new phenomenon, the Hollywood communtiy has been adopting children for years and especially needy or special needs children, go check out some of the stars from the 50's 60's
Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton adopted a german baby because that was the thing to do at the time.

The only reason she's going through this nonsense is because she's copying someone else. Otherwise he'll probably grow up a drug addled start brat. Nothing wrong with that... JOKE

Apparently, it took Angelina quite few months to adopt her first child and her second child is an AIDS baby both parents dead of AIDS. She tried to adopt a Russian child but that did't go through.

It sure isn't new thing, Josephine Baker adopted 12 children all of different ethnic origin calling them The Rainbow Tribe, Also George Lucas' kids are adopted.

What fucking nonsense. What a bunch of fawning idiots the North American media has become. This Madonna shit is news?

Get real the story here is not about the kid, or orphans or Africa. It's about MADONNA.

She has proved yet again to be one the world's most savvy self-promoters. She's so good she's even got me involved writing in this stupid thread!

I have to agree that the media has been played like a violin.

She goes to Malawi and sets up a foundation named after her album "Ray of Light", then she pulls an Angelina Jolie and adopts a kid and the worlds media salivates and follows her around like fools.

I found the following article from Fox News interesting:

Madonna Building Kabbalah-Linked Orphanage in Malawi
Thursday, October 05, 2006

By Roger Friedman

Madonna: More Money to Kabbalah Than AIDS, Education

I told you last July that Madonna was giving millions of dollars to the Kabbalah Centre, an IRS-sanctioned religion founded by Karen and Philip Berg. The Kabbalah Centre is not part of Judaism; it is an independently organized religion.

Madonna’s largesse comes through her Ray of Light Foundation. She parks money there tax-free, then distributes it to other causes. Wednesday's announcement that she’s going to build an orphanage in the African country of Malawi is linked to the planned curriculum: Kabbalah.

Madonna, you see, is hooked on Kabbalah.

The newest tax filing for the Ray of Light Foundation shows she hasn’t given up on the Bergs yet. She gave their Spirituality for Kids branch $268,106 in 2005. Madonna donated another $184,250 to the Kabbalah Centre itself. And that’s what she’s reporting publicly and in the United States.

What’s interesting about Madonna’s donations to the Bergs is that they far exceed anything she gives for music or education. Her donation to the Grammy Foundation’s MusiCares program — $2,500 — is laughable by comparison.

The same goes for the sum she handed over for AIDS research in 2005 — $10,000 to AIDS Project Los Angeles and $15,000 to the T.J. Martell Foundation for Leukemia, Cancer and AIDS Research.

For all of her preaching about AIDS, Madonna lists nothing on her Ray of Light return for groups like amfAR, Elton John's AIDS Foundation or dozens of other organizations trying to stamp out the disease in Africa.

Only one charity besides Kabbalah — Habitat for Humanity at $100,000 — got a large amount of Madonna's money. The material girl — who is said to be adopting a Malawian baby to keep in step with Angelina Jolie — has her priorities.
