CNN is doing a pole asking that Question, he didn't release too many solo albums, shouldn't that title be for artists like Elton John or Madonna? they are both still cranking the hits, well Madonna anyway.

Sorry. can't really compare MJ with the other 2, I think MJ had his first hit when he was 11 with J5. His flame burned bright and furious.

It's about quality and impact not about quantity, in this case anyway.

your mom says hi.
he may not have put out as many solo albums but selling 28 million of one of them and counting to the tune of 65 million world wide kinda puts him on top in my opinion. without mentioning that thriller spent 37 weeks on the billboard chart at #1, winning 8 grammy's for one album which was and i think still is a record.

you can also go to any country in the world and ask pretty much anyone who michael jackson is and they will know. i'm not sure that elton or madonna as great as they are have the same world wide coverage.

i mean i can remember as a kid people lining up and paying to see the thriller music video at the theater! i've never since seen people line and pay to see a music video at the theater, not even when puff daddy was throwing millions behind his video's.

thriller made history as the first and only record to be America's top-selling album two years running (1983 and 1984). Thriller has been certified 27x platinum by the RIAA, giving it Double Diamond Award status in the US. In 1985, the Guinness Book of Records named Thriller the Best Selling Album of All Time, an achievement which remains unsurpassed to this day.

thats just one album, he sold millions of his other ones as well, which were looked at as disappointing by "thriller" standards but extremely well by any one else's standards, thats the league that michael was in.

Bob Marley was the first Afro-American/Caribbean International Global Superstar, not Michael Jackson.

Bob Marley did more for pan-Africanism & poverty advocacy, than Michael Jacksons' "We are the World".

Bob Marley never lost touch with the roots of his people;whereas Michael Jackson went to extraordinary measure,to become a white man.

Bob Marley;lived up like,"The Man",sleeping with hundreds of women.
Michael Jackson slept with boys.

Bob Marleys' music is defined;by the most simple musical instruments, paired with the most soulful of lyrics.
Michael Jacksons' music is defined by the most sophisticated synthesized musical instruments, paired with the most superficial of lyrics.

Bob Marley risked his life;to bring peace,to Jamaicas' bloody elections of the 1970s'.
Michael Jackson;hided from the real world,to pursue his deluded fantasies at Neverland Ranch.

I agree with this statement. I love Bob Marley!! His son Damian Marley is also great.

I have never been a real fan of Michael, but always loved Marley. :)

There is no comparison, though. They are completely different genres of music. Bob Marley is reggae, which has always been political, and sexy. Michael is pop, which has never been known for its political messages, but it can sometimes be sexy, when its not boring. :)

The video for Thriller (the single) was also pretty unique at the time.

Did someone pee in your corn flakes? People can't give a girl a compliment around here without someone making a negative comment. Track star is not an ass kisser. Also wasn't Hubba with inthebum and little asian guy?
Actually, I am going to take it back about Hubba, because he actually posts for fun and never really says anything bad about anybody. :) Sorry Hubba, sometimes I just get caught up in the moment, lol

Light bearer, every time you post anything, I can feel the discord emanating from your words. You truly are an unhappy soul :(

Nope, not the greatest

He had some great hits as a kid; he made a couple very good albums crammed with catchy hits at this peak; he was a great performer; and then he disappeared into weirdness. He wasn't a musical innovator in the same sense as the greatest pop stars of the last century, and/or didn't have the same lasting career as say:

Louis Armstrong
Bing Crosby
Duke Ellington
Frank Sinatra
Elvis Presley
Hank Williams
The Beatles
Bob Dylan
James Brown
Bob Marley

One of the things that will detract from his historical importance was that there was no message to his music; it was all about "let's boogie".

His peak of popularity also coincided with with the peak of mass media -- album sales were at their high point; there was still a top 40 radio that everybody listened to; everybody saw the same tv special where he showed off his moonwalk. It will be impossible for anyone to reach that percentage of any audience again, now that everybody listens to their own playlist....

As for MJ, was he the greatest ever? No, but I'd say he's one of the greatest.

He was certainly the biggest and most influential act of the generation that grew up on his music from Jackson 5 onwards. The acts that HankQuinlan listed were the greatest of the prior generations that adored them. Mozart, Sinatra, Elvis, Beatles and MJ all belong on the same echelon.

well i fucking love bob marley so i'm not gonna say too much that conflicts with your opinion, but i will say something about the michael trying to be white thing.

bob marley actually is half white for the record but thats besides the point. bob came from jamaica which has a very strong black culture not a persecuted black culture that michael grew up in of the u.s.a. of the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and even really to a lesser extent now.

the pressure to conform to the white ideal of beauty just wasn't in jamaica the way it was in north america. unless you have lived the black experience, especially in that time line you can't really form a hard opinion on the pressure jackson felt to fit into white america.

but, maybe you are black, i don't know? i'm guessing that you are not. as for the child abuse, he was never convicted of either charge. here's my opinion on it.

i'm not gonna say he didn't do it cause i was not there and there was some circumstantial evidence, but there were just as many witnesses that said it didn't happen. put it this way, if it did happen, who is more evil? jackson or the parents that took the money and ran instead of going ahead with justice for their kid?

i know if my kid was diddled, no amount of money would make me not want to see justice played out. as for the celebrity sometimes its just easier to cut your loses and part with the money even if you didn't do the crime. a lengthy trial could cost more then the settlement money.

Pretty much the same either way isn't it? Being joked about being bleached or a "cow" as you say.

So what's your excuse as to why his nose changes about 5 times? etc etc?
I think your grasping at straws to make excuses for him. At the end of the day, no one needs to make excuses for the man. He did to his body what he wanted to(his right) and lived his life the way he wanted. People are always going to comment on successful and different individuals.

If MJ touched your life because of a song he wrote or because he was a cute kid singing songs at such a young age. Awesome! But please, lets stop with all the drama about how he was this and how he was that. None of us really know if he molested kids or really was just a quirky guy who never grew up.

What I really find interesting is how nobody gave 2 turds about him or listened to his music a week ago and now he's the greatest once again. The self proclaimed "King of Pop" turned into the "King of Pill Popping" and that is very sad to say the least. I hope everyone can let the man RIP and if his music brings you pleasure.....turn it up loud and enjoy.
we may not agree on who "The King of Pop" is...

but The King of cliches...

no contest...

exuberanttoki, if reading Hubba doesn't help you with your insomnia, nothing will...
